COLLINSVILLE – Edwardsville swept the team titles Tuesday in the Red Division portion of the Madison County track meet Tuesday.
Yet it was Alton High junior LaJarvia Brown that stole the show at Collinsville High.
She won three events and set two county records as the Redbirds scored 100 points, second to Edwardsville in the six-school girls’ competition. The Tigers tallied 153 points for their 15th consecutive MadCo title.
And the Edwardsville boys accumulated 205 points, or 70 more than runner-up Collinsville, for their seventh successive county championship.
Brown, meanwhile, won the long jump (17 feet, 6.5 inches) and established records with her victories in the triple jump (40-2) and the 300-meter low hurdles (44.89 seconds). Highland’s Jenna Uhe held the county record of 37-5.75 in the triple jump from 2004 and Edwardsville’s Christina Perozzi had the all-time mark in the 300-meter low hurdles of 44.9 in 1989.
“She’s consistent and being consistent is what we are trying to get out of everybody,” Alton coach Terry Mitchell said. “LaJarvia has been very good to stay that consistent all season.”
Brown, also the anchor of the Redbirds’ 4x100-meter relay, second to Edwardsville, said, “I was probably the most happy with the way I ran the hurdles. I knew I had a shot at getting the record.
She added: “I think I’m in a pretty good place now and content with what I’m doing. State is less than a month away and I want to keep improving. You can always improve.”
Teammate Katie Mans finished first in the high jump by going 5-4 and extended her winning ways. “I was going for 5-6.25 and the county record (5-6), but my calf hit the bar on my way down,” she said. “I’ve gone 5-6, but 5-4 ties my second best jump this year. I’m progressing and I’d like to make 5-6 regularly. My goal is to clear 5-8 this season.”
Taylor Carpenter, second in the 100-meter low hurdles (15.81), and the Redbirds’ 4x200-meter relay that finished second (1:50.73), added to their effort.
Edwardsville achieved its goal of claiming another county championship, coach MiKala Thompkins said.
“This is absolutely our best meet of the year,” she said. “It’s more of a confidence boost for the team.”
Granite City’s girls increased their confidence by scoring 67 points, good enough for fourth place in the six-team field. Triad (117 points) took third. Highland (62) was fifth and Collinsville (43) sixth.
Andrea Hyde of the Warriors won the 100-meters (12.92) and teammate Catherine Jakich was best in the discus (126-3) and runner-up in the shot (38-10).
“Catherine had a fantastic meet and she’s a very hard worker,” Granite City coach Becky Cook said. “Andrea has run a better time, but she did a great job today in winning the county. It was her best win of the season.”
Thrower A.J. Epenesa and runner Wes Schoenthal spurred Edwardsville’s boys. Epenesa, just a sophomore, heaved the discus 180-11 to break the old mark of 178-11.5, established by Collinsville’s Steve Birger in 1969. Schoenthal won the 800-meters in 1:55.79, busting Tim Flamer’s 1:56.19 record from 1985. Schoenthal also was best in the 1,600-meters in 4:18.83.
“Overall, we came together as a team and scored in all events,” Tigers’ coach Chad Lakatos said. “We had a lot of great performances.”
It was Granite City and Triad sharing third in boys with 60 points apiece. Alton was right behind them with 57 points and Highland had 37 points.
“We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores and they are doing well,” Redbirds’ coach Eric Dickerson. “There’s one senior, a handful of juniors and the rest are freshmen or sophomores.
“The future looks good for us.”
Sophomore Arie Macias of Alton took third in the 1,600-meters at 4:36.88 and Keenan Stegall was third in the 400-meters at 52.87. Zach Llewellyn placed third in the shot at 47-1.5 and the Birds’ 4x800-meter grabbed third in 8:43.41.
Raishon Bobo, runner-up in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at 40.73 and Will O’Keefe, second to Schoenthal in the 800-meters at 1:57.35, led the Granite City guys.
“Right now, our strongest area is our distance team,” Warriors’ coach Tom Miller said. “We’ve been better overall this season. We don’t have a lot of numbers, but we have some hard workers.”
