LaJarvia Brown | Girls’ Basketball
Brown, a junior for the Alton Redbirds, logged the 1,000th point of her career already on Jan. 29 at AHS. She scored 10 points in the game and the benchmark points came on a bucket with 4.6 remaining in the game, giving her 1,001 points for her career.
The 10-point effort in a tough 75-20 loss to St. Louis powerhouse Incarnate Word Academy came on the heels of a 21-point performance in a 68-62 loss to O’Fallon of the Southwestern Conference on the road on Jan. 27.
Brown leads the Redbirds in scoring on the season with 16 points per game.
“It feels good to accomplish this as a junior,” Brown said. “It’s always been a goal, but I can’t take any attention away from my teammates because without them none of it would have been possible.”
Mike Stimac | Boys’ Basketball
On Jan. 31 East Alton-Wood River senior Mike Stimac became the 13th player in school history to join the 1,000-point club. Stimac scored 22 points against Bunker Hill inside Memorial Gym to achieve the career feat. The memorable two points came on a jumper at the 4:45 mark of the third quarter in front of a packed house.
A timeout was called and EA-WR head coach Kyle Duncan gave Stimac a picture to commemorate the accomplishment. The Oilers went on to defeat the Minutemen 65-55 to add the cherry on top.
“Personally, it feels good to be one of 13 to reach this accomplishment out of almost 90 years of school history,” Stimac said. “It’s pretty cool to be one of the people to make it.”
