EAST ALTON — Collinsville’s Jason Sperry and Cory Sperry each had a hat trick and the Kahoks held on to shock Alton 6-5 Thursday night in the first game of their best-of-three MVCHA Class 2A North Division semifinal series at the East Alton Ice Arena.

Jason Sperry scored all three of his goals in the first period of the late-nighter, which began at 8:45 p.m. Cory Sperry added two in the second and the eventual game-winning goal early in the third period. The Kahoks, who were shut out twice by Alton in the regular season, were outshot by Alton 37-23, but Collinsville goalie Caleb Nowicki came up with 32 saves.

Trailing 6-3 in the third period, Alton staged a rally on a pair of power-play goals from leading scorer Alex Rubin. He scored from assists by Kain Henson and Tyler St. Peters with 5:36 remaining and then again with 3:14 remaining, assisted by Ben Drake. But the comeback fell a goal short and the Redbirds find themselves with their backs to the wall.

Alton needs a victory in Game Two at 7:15 p.m. on Monday night to keep the series alive. Game Three, if necessary, is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Feb. 16. All North Division playoff games are scheduled for the East Alton Ice Arena. The winner of the series will advance to the North Division finals against Edwardsville, which finished first in the regular-season North standings. Alton was second in the regular season standings in the three-team North.

The first period featured three goals from each team including the first of the game from Alton’s Jorda

EAST ALTON — On a Senior Night that was even more special than usual, the Alton Redbirds rolled to an 8-2 victory over Belleville Tuesday night. And in the process, they honored a fallen teammate who’s been gone two years but whose memory has remained alive with the team.

Alton got three goals from Kain Henson and finished the regular season at 12-4 with the Class 2A Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association victory at the East Alton IceArena. The win gave the Redbirds momentum at the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs following next week’s MVCHA All-Star games.

“This is the most complete game we’ve played in a long time,” Alton coach Abram Henson said. “It was a very special night all around.”

Indeed. The Redbirds honored 10 seniors, including Jordan Klope, who was killed in an automobile crash two years ago during his sophomore season. The team has honored him during the last two years and continued to do so during the pre-game Senior Night ceremony.

Klope’s parents, Chris and Sonja Klope, were present with the rest of the seniors’ parents to receive the same acknowledgements as the others. His

The Alton Redbirds were being watched closely by head coach Abram Henson in Thursday night’s Mississippi Valley Club Association game against Belleville.

And for the record, the Redbirds passed the examination with an 8-2 victory at the Granite City Ice Rink.

“We switched some things around tonight,” Henson said. “We needed to try and shake some things up after that loss in our last game.”

That last-game loss was an 8-0 defeat at the hands Class 2A North Division rival Edwardsville last week. Henson, the Redbirds’ first-year coach, was anxious to see how his team would react following that loss.

“We sure played a lot better tonight than we did the other night,” Henson said. “We made some changes and I think our guys responded very well.”

On of the changes was moving Jordan Myer from defense to forward. He responded with a goal in the third period.

“He played a strong game,” Henson said of Myer. “I think our guys came back from that loss and showed they were ready to learn, put it behind us and move forward.”

The Redbirds, who ran their record on the season to 10-3, outshot Belleville 29-14.

Alton held a 2-0 lead after the first period. Four different players scored for Alton.

“We got off to a strong start early,” Henson said. “That was good to see.”

Scotty Waldrup gave the Redbirds a 1-0 lead at the 12:04 mark of the first period off an assist from Jake Bohn.

Jake Cunningham’s goal at 5:53, assisted by Alex Rubin and Kain Henson, made it 2-0 after the first period.

“Our passing, our skating, backchecking and forechecking were all much better tonight,” Abram Henson said. “(Goalie)

EAST ALTON — Mitchell Klug had things well in hand Thursday night for the Alton Redbirds hockey club - some 23 times, to be exact.

Klug, the Alton goalie, made 23 saves and the Redbirds shut out Collinsville 7-0 in a Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association game at the East Alt0n Ice Arena. The victory raised Alton’s mark to 9-2 on the season, while Collinsville dropped to 5-5.

“It was a good win for us,” Alton coach Abram Henson said. “We played a solid game and came out on top.”

While Klug was stopping all the Kahoks’ shots, Alton’s Kain Henson was leading the way for the Redbirds. He scored three goals and Alton outshot Collinsville 36-23.

“Mitchell did a great job,” Henson said. “He made all of the key saves. He made ALL the saves - period.”

Kain Henson scored a pair of first-period goals and got it started with one at the 9:28 mark, off an assist from Christian Shank.

Three minutes later, Alex Rubin made it 2-0 with a goal off an assist from Jake Cunningham. Henson scored again at 2:07 unassisted to make it 3-0 and then assisted teammate Austin Erthal’s goal with 1.7 seconds remaining to make to 4-0 heading into the second period.

The Redbirds’ Brendan Lowe scored at 3:04 of the second period from assists by Ben Drake and Jake Bohn to make it 5-0. Henson’s third goal, assisted by Bohn, made it 6-0 at 2:45.

Cunningham scored the only goal of the third period at 11:38 to make it 7-0. He was assisted by Henson.

The Redbirds were whistled for six two-minute penalties, while the Kahoks were called for no penalties. Collinsv
