GIRLS' TRACK
ALTON CORRALS TITLE AT JERSEY RELAYS — The Alton Redbirds accumulated 112 points to escape as champions of the Jersey Relays on Friday.
It was a relays format so no individual champions were crowned, but it didn't stop the Redbirds from setting some new high marks for the program.
LaJarvia Brown continued her torrid spring, setting a new AHS record in the 300-meter low hurdles. Brown went 44.8 seconds to secure the new benchmark. It also set a meet record.
Alton won the team title in the 300 low hurdles, as Brown was joined by Kimbreon Knight and Taylor Carpenter in the event. Other team titles came in the shot put with Jewel Wagner, Chayvon Buckingham and Alexis Meyers, the long jump with Brown Tyriss Holloway and Carpenter, the high jump with Katie Mans, Brown and Holloway, the 400-meter high hurdles with Carpenter, Diarra Smith, Rebecca Adney and Knight and the 800-meter relay with Rylee Davis, Anyria Goner, Christina Hutson and Mans.
Finishing behind the Redbirds at the meet were: Quincy (108), Jerseyville (104), Granite City (54), Civic Memorial (40), Jacksonville (24) and Carrollton (20).
BOYS' TENNIS
ALTON IS FIFTH AT PEORIA RICHWOODS — The Alton Redbirds nabbed fifth place out of the nine-team Peoria Richwoods Green and Invite.
Richwoods won the invitational with 35 points, followed by: Champaign Central (33), Morton (28), Quincy (24), and Alton (22). East Peoria, Quincy Notre Dame, Rock Island and Peoria Christian rounded out the field.
For the Redbirds, Jackson Scheiter finished second at No. 2 singles and Carl Stradal was fourth at No. 1 singles. In doubles, Drew Hays and Silas Chapman won the consolation championship over East Peoria at No. 2 doubles. The doubles team of Walker Moan and Jett Durr finished 6th at No. 1 doubles, and Joe Papin and Julius Resche also finished 6th at No. 3 doubles.
The Redbirds are scheduled to play Collinsville at 4 p.m. today in a Southwestern Conference match rescheduled from April 8 canceled due to rain. Alton heads to Edwardsville for another SWC showdown at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
BASEBALL
CM SWEEPS TWO FROM STAUNTON — The Civic Memorial Eagles welcomed the Staunton Bulldogs to the Bethalto Sports Complex on Saturday and promptly swept them in a double header.
CM, now 4-8 on the season, bested the Bulldogs 2-1 and 11-1 in two games. Those wins came on the heels of an 11-1 loss at O'Fallon on Friday for the Eagles.
In Game 1, Brandon Hampton earned the win on the mound, going five innings, while surrendering one run on five hits and striking out four and walking two. John Whitworth nailed it down, earning the save.
Tyler Andrus had a hit and a RBI for the Eagles, while Whitworth smacked a double and Zac Cato hit a triple to pace the offense in the win.
In Game 2, CM exploded with seven runs in the bottom of the third to erase a 1-0 deficit on its way to a six-inning victory.
The Eagles collected 14 hits in the win, highlighted by Matt Lawrence's home run and three RBIs. Chaz Johannigmeier was 4 for 4 with a RBI to standout in the win, too. Corey Price earned the win on the hill.
CM is scheduled to play at Jerseyville at 4:30 p.m. today in Mississippi Valley Conference action. The Eagles play Marquette Catholic at Gordon Moore Park at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in nonconference action.
MARQUETTE FALLS AT JERSEYVILLE — The Marquette Catholic Explorers traveled to Jerseyville to take on the Panthers on Saturday and fell 5-3 in a nonconference baseball game.
Jersey took a 2-0 lead in the third inning and never relinquished it.
Marquette's John Hughes suffered the loss on the hill, going 5.1 innings, scattering five hits and allowing five runs, all earned, while fanning nine, walking two and plunking three batters.
Will Mortland got the win for Jersey, while Crick Kimble earned the save.
Next up for the Explorers is a 4:30 p.m. Prairie State Conference game today at Mount Olive. Marquette then returns home, playing host to Civic Memorial at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
ROXANA SWEEPS DOUBLE HEADER FROM DUPO — Roxana played at Dupo on Saturday, beating the Tigers 6-2 and 18-3 in a double header.
The Shells climbed to .500 at 5-5 with the pair of victories. The wins came a day after taking a 2-1 loss at Metro East Lutheran in a last minute scheduled contest.
Roxana received a strong effort from Tanner Davis on the mound in Game 1 to garner the win. Josh Rudd locked down the save. Davis went five innings without allowing a run, while scattering three hits and pitching around four walks.
Offensively, Davis picked up a pair of RBIs to help himself out despite going hitless. Chance Foss, Blake Vandiver, Randy Skiff and Joe Ingram all collected two hits in the Game 1 win.
In Game 2, Roxana erupted in the five-inning win. The Shells scored in every inning, highlighted by a four runs in the third, six in the fourth and five in the fifth.
Sam Mosby went the distance on the hill to secure the triumph. Davis was 4 for 4 with three RBIs, while Zach Golenor and Ethan Johnson also produced three-RBI games. Ingram had three hits and two doubles in the win.
Roxana is scheduled to play host to Bunker Hill at 4:30 p.m. today.
EA-WR DROPS A PAIR TO RED BUD — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers welcomed Red Bud on Saturday with not so great results.
The Oilers lost 9-3 and 3-0 in a double header to the visiting Muskateers. With the pair of losses EA-WR is now 3-14 on the season.
Next up for the Oilers is a 4:30 p.m. game at Brussels on Tuesday.
SOFTBALL
REDBIRDS LOSE TIGHT GAME TO KAHOKS — The Alton Redbirds welcomed the Collinsville Kahoks to AHS on Saturday after being washed out on Thursday.
Knotted 1-1 entering the seventh inning, Collinsville plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and Alton could only muster one in an attempted comeback in the bottom of the seventh, ultimately losing 3-2.
With the defeat the Birds are now 4-4 on the season, but 0-3 in the Southwestern Conference. The Kahoks improved to 6-6 and 2-1 on the league slate.
Brittany Roady suffered the loss in the circle, despite fanning five and walking no one. Three errors plagued Alton in the loss.
Offensively, AHS outhit CHS 7-4. Tomi Dublo led the way with two hits and a RBI. Bronte Fencel also picked up a RBI.
Alton plays at 4:30 p.m. today at Brussels and then heads to Belleville West for SWC action at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
EA-WR STUMBLES AT MASCOUTAH — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers dropped a tight ball game at Mascoutah on Friday, losing 4-3.
The loss drops EA-WR to 5-8 on the season.
Victoria Beachum took the loss in the circle. At the plate, Emme Flanigan and Heather Martin mirrored each other to pace the Oilers. Both hitters picked up two hits, including a double and drove in a run. Kari Westbrook also had a hit and a RBI in the loss.
EA-WR is scheduled to play host to Collinsville at 4:30 p.m. today.
ROXANA BOWS TO GILLESPIE IN SCC PLAY — The Gillespie Miners played host to the Roxana Shells on Friday and picked up their first win of the season in a 7-1 triumph.
Roxana slipped to 5-7 and 1-2 in the South Central Conference with the loss, while Gillespie improved to 1-5 and 1-0. The Miners followed it up with a 1-0 victory over Mount Olive on Saturday to move to 2-5 overall.
Hannah Rexford was tagged with the loss in the circle, tossing five innings before giving way to Andrea Lawson to close it out.
At the dish, Cindy Scroggins steered the Shells with a 2 for 2 performance with a RBI. Scroggins' RBI staked Roxana to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, which the Miners quickly erased in the bottom of the inning tying it up and then scoring again in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth on the way to the win.
Roxana plays at 4:30 p.m. today at Freeburg.
GIRLS' SOCCER
MARQUETTE FALLS AT QUINCY NOTRE DAME — Quincy Notre Dame tallied a second-half goal on Friday to erase a 1-1 stalemate at the half to defeat visiting Marquette Catholic 2-1.
With the loss the Explorers dipped to 4-2-2 on the young season.
Marquette is back in action at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, playing host to local rival East Alton-Wood River.
