COLLINSVILLE – Roxana’s Cree Stumpf and Carlinville’s Jacob Landon were seeking bigger challenges than Monday’s South Central Conference track meet in Hillsboro can offer.
Both distance runners found those tests Saturday at Kahok Stadium. And both seniors rose to the occasion with personal-best performances in the Collinsville Invitational.

Stumpf broke 10 minutes for the first time while shattering Roxana’s school-record in the 3,200 meters by more than seven seconds with his third-place finish in 9 minutes, 57.37 seconds, placing behind Carbondale freshman Alex Partlow in 9:46.23 and Lyons sophomore Sawyer Madell in 9:50.08.
And a week after turning in a 1:59.24 to win the 800 at the Jokisch-Grandone Invite on his home track, Carlinville’s Landon bettered that PR by running fourth in 1:58.50 in an 800-meter race that had nine runners break two minutes. Granite City’s Andrew O’Keefe won in 1:53.32 to set a school and meet record.
Lyons Township from LaGrange made the trip from suburban Chicago and claimed the team championship with 66 points. Edwardsville was the runner-up with 60 points, ahead of a top 10 capped by Cahokia (55.5), Alton (55), Collinsville (50), Freeburg (50), OFallon (49.5), Mascoutah (47), Belleville West (40) and Belleville East (36).
Roxana, which had Dylan Murray run the 100 in 11.37 to place sixth, scored nine points to finish 20th with Landon’s five points putting the Cavaliers 22nd in a 25-team field. Quincy senior Jordan Johnson, signed with Iowa, swept the throws with a pair of school records. He won the discus with a throw of 206 feet, 1 inch and the shot put at 62-11.
Alton got a PR from both Cassius Havis and Joe Morrisey in third-place efforts. Havis improved on his previous best of 1:58.51 in the 800 meters by finishing in 1:56.73. Morrissey broke 40 seconds for the first time in the 300-meter hurdles by taking third in 39.71.
The Redbirds’ 4x400 relay produced a first-place finish with Kegan Bratton, Joe Havis, Tim Johnson and Morrissey covering 1,600 meters in 3:24.95. Alton’s 4x100 of Johnson, Bratton, Jaden Singleton and Morrissey ran fifth in 43.82.
Alton senior Deonte McGoy settled for runner-up sprints in both the 100 and 200. Collinsville’s Jermarrion Stewart ran behind McGoy in both sprints in both the Winston Brown Invite and the Madison County Meet, but flipped places on his home track.
McGoy ran the 100 in 10.77 behind Stewart’s 10.70. Alton’s Jaden Singleton was fifth in 11.34. Stewart also defeated McGoy in the 200, with the Kahoks junior winning in 21.34 and McGoy second in 22.01.
Alton added top-six finishes in the triple jump with Ju’Qui Womack taking fourth at 41-3.5 and teammate Trey Miller sixth at 40-9.5.
Edwardsville won two events with Kenyon Johnson winning the long jump at 22-4.5 and the 4x800 relay of Jack Pifer, Drew Stover, Zach Walters and Roland Prenzler first in 8:06.56.
