“She was really doing well after the morning ession,” Alton bowling team coach Dave Meyer said of Westbrook. “She was 17th and only about 20 pins out of the top 12, which would earn a medal.”
Westbrook, a senior, had a strong morning session. It started with her high game for the day, a 246. She followed that with a 217 and a 191.
But after the lunch break, Westbrook rolled a 139, which dropped her from 17th place down to 33rd. But she rallied with a 216 and finished with a 181 for a total two-day pinfall of 2,382 and a 198.5 average.
“I think somebody must’ve told her wher she was in the stahdings,” Meyer said. “We never discuss it with our bowlers. They really don’t want to know.
“If you start thinking too much about that, you try too hard. Your grip on the ball changes and it can be a problem.
“But even though she dropped down, she regrouped and moved back up.”
Westbrook had advanced to the second day of the two-day tourney by finishing 29th overall Friday and 12th among the individual bowlers not on advancing teams. Saturday, she moved up two spots to 10th among bowler not from advancing teams.
“Ashley had a great season and a very exciting last two weeks with the regional and sectional,” Meyer said. “She did a great job and I’m very proud of her.”
Meanwhile, Edwardsville senior Sydney Sahuri finsihed 57th overall with 2,241 pins and a 186.8 average Saturday. Her high game was a 235 in the fifth game. Her low game was a 161 in her first of the morning session.
Rebecca Haderman of Harlem was the individual state champion with a two-day total of 2,670. Laruen Tomazszewski was second with1,552.
O’Fallon won the team state championship, getting past runner-up Machesney Park Harlem. O’Fallon had 2,938 ins Saturday and a two-day total of 12,122. Harlem had 2,899 Saturday and a total of 12,024. Minooka took the third -place trophy with 11,856 pins.
“We took a picture of all the Southwestern Conference girls,” Meyer said. “They all advanced to Day 2 at the state tournaemnt, and that is something to be proud of.
“Ashley and all the girls did a great job. They were representing not only their schools, but also our conference and the southern part of the state.”

ALTON – It’s always a great thing when siblings support each other in everything that they do, and in the case of the Dublo sisters, they not only support each other, but their teammates on the Alton High School girls’ bowling team.
In the recent Southern Illinois Team Challenge held at Bel-Air Bowl in Belleville, senior Robi had a top 30 finish with a six-game series of 999, while her sister Sami, who’s a junior, threw a six-game set of 780 to help the Redbirds finish sixth in the Gold Division.
“They’re both doing OK,” said Alton head coach Dave Meyer, “and working hard on the lanes. They both do a good job, help each other out and the team. I’m really happy that they’re starting to work hard together.”
One of the things that the sisters do is working with freshman Regan Spinks on her game and helping to calm the entire team down with things aren’t going well. And they’re very good at supporting each other as well.
“When Robi does something good in a game, Sami will usually say “that’s my sissy!,’” Meyer said. “And if Sami has a good game, Robi cracks her up, and it’s true the opposite way. It’s really interesting, and good, how they work together”
In fact, there isn’t a trace of a sibling rivalry when both Robi and Sami are on the lanes. They’re cheering each other and their teammates on. Outside the lanes, it’s a typical sister relationship.
“They may have joked around about something else, but there’s no rivalry when they’re on the lanes,” Meyer said.
Robi is a four-year member of the Redbirds’ team, and Sami’s in her third year. Both have similar traits when they’re bowling.
“Robi has been a really good supporter,” Meyer said, “and Sami’s pretty much the same way.”
In fact, there’s so much similarity between the sisters that one might mistake them for being identical twins.
“The way they act, you might think they were twins,” Meyer said. “Sometimes, I’ll call Robi Sami, and she’ll say ‘Dave, you still can’t get it right after three years?,’” he said with a laugh.
Robi will graduate from Alton High this coming spring and has plans to be a nurse in her future. And Meyer hopes that Sami will come back for her senior season to lend support and leadership to the Redbirds.
“For Robi, her ultimate goal is she wants to be a nurse,” Meyer said. “I’m hoping Sami will want to come back for her senior year. I’ll need a leader and I hope that she comes back and bowls for her senior year.”
But as long as the Dublo sisters are around, there’s never a dull moment with the Redbirds on the lanes.
“I love having them on the team,” Meyer said. “They’re both a lot of fun.”

Alton High bowler Alex Bergin, center, in congratulated by teammates at the 2017 IHSA Girls Bowling Regional Tourney at Bowl Haven. Bergin claimed the individual championship at the regional and is one of three returning seniors on this season’s team.
ALTON — Alton High’s Dave Meyer is getting a first-hand look at just how much versatility is required of a prep bowling team coach.
Meyer, whose AHS Redbirds bowlers split with Edwardsville Thursday at Bowl Haven, has a wealth of experience on his boys team, while the girls are facing the season high in potential but lacking in numbers.

“We have seven seniors on the boys varsity team and at least four of those bowled at state last year,” Meyer said. “On the girls team, though, we have just five bowlers total; that’s the team. There’s no junior varsity, but they’re coming along, improving each week.”
Thursday against the Tigers, Alton’s boys team posted a 39-1, while the Redbirds girls team lost 25-15.
With the situations varying between the boys and girls teams, Meyer has found the need to set much different goals for each.”
“For our boys, the first goal is a threepeat as regional champs, wherever we go,” he said. “And we also want to go back to state, but we want to set a goal of advancing to the second day.”
The Redbirds’ seven seniors include four-year varsity bowler Matt Engdale, as well as Chris Duke, who’s been placed in the anchor spot by Meyer.
“(Engdale) can be a leader,” Meyer said. “He’s been there four years and he’s bowled at state twice. he knows what it’s like and he knows what it takes.
“Duke is solid; he’s also a leader and I’ve put him in the anchor spot. Along with Gavin (Taylor), those three can help us reach those goals and can help the rest of the bowlers, too.”
The other four seniors include Trevor Vallow, Lance Perkey, Jared Cochran and Ta’varion Ward. Sophomore Danny Leslie will also see varsity action.
Thursday in his team’s victory over Edwardsville, Duke led with 612 and Cochran was close behind with a 608.
The AHS boys rallied from eighth to finish third over the weekend at the Abel Lincoln Tournament in Springfield. Following Thursday’s action against Edwardsville, the Redbirds will head to Belleville’s Bel-Air Bowl for the Southern Illinois Classic Saturday.
“We’ll know more about our team after this weekend,” Meyer said. “We’ve got a chance to do well. We’re getting a lot more positive and our competitiveness continues to improve.”
At the Abe Lincoln Tourney, which was a six-game affair, AHS finished 50 pins behind second-place O’Fallon. Cochran finished fifth and Duke was seventh.
The Redbirds girls team, meanwhile, has followed the lead of seniors Alex Bergin, Robi Dublo and Ashley Westbrook early on. The rest of the lineup include junior Sami Dublo and freshman Regan Spinks.
Against the Tigers Thursday, Bergin led Alton with a 632 series. She also had high game with a 246. Rylee Lengendorf led Edwardsville with a 573 series and a 222 game.
As a junior last season, Bergin claimed the regional individual championship and helped lead the Redbirds to the fourth and final team slot at the ensuing sectional tourney. She posted a score of 1,246 to claim the regional crown. Robi Dublo was next-high for Alton with a 956 series.
With Bergin’s high score setting the pace, the Redbirds beat out Edwardsville for the final sectional berth, 4,894-4,620.
And while Bergin didn’t follow with a state-qualifying score at the sectional, the groundwork was in place, according to Meyer.
“Our first tournament, the girls finished 11th,” Meyer said. “The last one, we moved up to seventh. It’s steady improvement.
“We, of course, always want to qualify as a team for state,” he said. “But for sure, we’d like to send individuals.”
Westbrook finished third at the Abe Lincoln Tournament and Bergin was right behind her in fourth, three pins back. Bergin also had the fourth-highest game with a 268.
“Alex and Ashley are really helping the other girls keep their emotions in check while they’re bowling,” he said. “I’m much in favor of the bowlers getting excited for each other and there’s a lot of that.”
“But I coach, and it was taught before I got here, that when you step up to the lane, you tune out everything else.”
