PREP YEAR IN REVIEW: Girls Bowler of the Year Ashley Heistand of Alton

No state, but Alton bowler ‘better this year’

By Pete Hayes - phayes@thetelegraph.com

Alton High School’s Ashley Heistand had a fourth-place individual finish at the Triad Regional and is a repeat winner of The Telegraph Girls Bowler of the Year award.

ALTON — There’s more to being a top performer than meets the eye. Just ask Alton High’s Ashley Heistand, The Telegraph’s Girls Bowler of the Year who’s garnered accolades at the team and individual level.

The 2016-17 bowling season had plenty of highlights for Heistand and her teammates. But after a strong showing at their own regional tournament, no Redbirds advanced from the sectional tournament to the IHSA State Tournament in Rockford.

And for Heistand, also the bowler of the year as a junior, that was a big change after being the lone AHS bowler last year at state and advancing with the team as a freshman.

“It just didn’t pan out,” Heistand said. “But as a team, I think overall we bowled better than a lot of people might think at first.

“But I think I bowled better this year,” Heistand said. “I had more confidence and overall, the regular season and regional went pretty well.”

The Redbirds finished second at the Triad Regional behind the Kahoks. Heistand was fourth overall with a 1,235 pin total.

But the Belleville Sectional the following week at Bel-Clair Bowl was ”one of those days,” Heistand said.

“It was an off day for everybody. Not sure exactly what happened, but it happens.”

What happened was a 12th-place finish by the Redbirds in the team standings and a 1,084 pin total for Heistand, leaving her out of the running for berth at the state tournament in Rockford. In fact, no Telegraph-area individuals or teams advanced to the state tournament.

At the regional, Alton finished ahead of Triad, Jersey and Highland, among others. But at the sectional, the Redbirds trailed all those schools in the final standings.

That sectional tournament was Heistand’s last as a varsity high school bowler. She had already decided that she wasn’t going to pursue a college bowling career. Not that she couldn’t, but that she knew that finding time for team bowling would be difficult once she started classes.

“I’m going to go into nursing,” said Heistand, who will begin taking classes at Lewis and Clark Community College this fall. “It’s very time-consuming and it’s a big commitment, but it’s what I want to do. It was a tough decision, but after thinking about it and talking to a lot of people about it, I decided going with college bowling probably wasn’t the best path.”

Heistand, who started bowling at the former Riverboat Lanes in Godfrey when she was 8 years old, said the experiences she’s had in the sport are something she’ll always treasure.

“In bowling I met a lot of friends,” she said. “On the teams I was on and the teams we bowled against. In high school, I bowled with the best friends (Claire Gorman and Elizabeth Hanke).

“And I had some great coaches. I learned so much from (former AHS coach) Jeff Woszczynski and (current coach) Dave Meyer,” she said. “Coach Meyer coached me in the offseason and I became more confident.

“I’ll miss bowling for sure, but I’ll still bowl in leagues when I can. I’m not totally giving it up.”

BELLEVILLE – Ashley Heistand's bowling career at Alton High School came to an end Saturday.

Heistand, a senior, had a six-game series of 1,084 with a high game of 244 as the Redbirds finished 12th in the Belleville East IHSA Sectional girls bowling tournament at Bel-Air Lanes.

While Heistand's career with the Redbirds didn't quite end the way she may have wanted it to, her contributions to Alton's program will not soon be forgotten, contributions that include a trip to the 2016 state tournament as an individual and a trip to the 2014 state tournament as part of a Redbird team that went through to the tournament.

“I just don't think we bowled the best that we could,” Heistand said. “Personally, I didn't bowl the best I could, especially the first half; I came back a little stronger in the second half with my fourth game (her 244). I couldn't figure out the lanes that well.

“It's a really tough sectional; this sectional is tough every year. For us, the pins just didn't fall the way we wanted them to.”

Being a part of the Redbird program has meant much to Heistand.

“I've made a whole bunch of friends through the bowling program all four years,” Heistand said. “My best friend and I have bowled together forever, so when we came into high school, we've been together the longest; that was really fun to bowl with her. Just making new friends; you grow close bonds with everybody.”

Heistand felt the Redbirds had a good season overall. “We won the (O'Fallon) Panther Invitational for the first time; that was really special for us. Overall, we had a good season.”

Heistand is optimistic about next season for her team. “I think they have a lot of potential,” Heistand said. “If they work hard enough, they can make it to state next year.”

COLLINSVILLE – Saturday was a good day for Collinsville's girls bowling team.

The Kahoks took the team lead after the second of six games in the IHSA Triad Regional girls bowling tournament at Collinsville's Camelot Bowl and never looked back en route to taking the team title to advance to next Saturday's Belleville East Sectional at Bel-Air Bowl in Belleville. Joining the Kahoks (6,127 pins) at the sectional are Alton (5,577), the host Knights (5,270) and Jersey(5,080).

Rounding out the field (in order of finish) were Highland, Piasa Southwestern, Edwardsville, Civic Memorial, Granite City, Metro East Lutheran, Roxana, Marquette Catholic and East Alton-Wood River.

The Kahoks' Madisyn Juenger came from behind on the final game of the day to take the individual championship with a six-game total of 1,363, edging out teammates Mikayla Block and Katelynn Wirtle. Alton's Ashley Heistand (who had the day's high game of 279 in Game 4) took fourth and Highland's Emma Schuster rounded out the top five.

Schuster led the 10 bowlers (those on non-qualifying teams) who advanced to the sectional as individuals; others moving on to Belleville were Marquette Catholic's Shelby Jones, CM's Ashley Westbrook, Southwestern's Alyssa Nowell, Highland's Haley Basler, Edwardsville's Sydney Sahuri, Granite City's Ashley Heiman, Edwardsville's Rachel Mctague, Southwestern's Kaitlyn Cathorall and Highland's Molli Pfister.

“I've grown up here (at Camelot) and I've bowled here since I was little,” Juenger said. “In the morning, I had some troubles; I was trying to get comfortable with the lanes. In the second half, I realized I needed to get it together if I wanted to do this; I wanted to make such an impact and go out with a bang – it's my senior year.

“I'm really excited (about the sectional); hopefully we can do just as good next week as we did this week. The main goal is to get to Rockford.”

“The girls did a good job,” said Redbird coach Dave Meyer. “We've still got to work on some spares this week, but it was a good week; we'll sort of relax a little bit and start back up again Monday; we still haven't finished out goal yet. They did a good job today – I'm proud of the girls, proud of the way they've worked hard.

“Our ultimate goal isn't there yet (moving to the Feb. 17-18 IHSA state tournament at Cherry Bowl in Rockford); our goal is to go as a team.”

“Looks like we're in (to the sectional); that was the goal for the day,” said Panther coach Chris Skinner. “We've got five seniors this year and that was one of their goals, to get out of regionals as a team. It's been a long time since we got a team out; I'm really proud of the way they came together and when someone would have a bad game, someone would have a good game and pick everyone up. It worked out well.

“We had a really good first game to get ourselves off on the right foot, a solid second. Our third game wasn't very good right before lunch but we stayed in that fourth spot and was able to hold on to it. We were worried about Highland – they made up some ground in Game 5 on us, but we came back and had a pretty solid Game 6. Bethany Stocks bowled really well today; she was our leadoff bowler and was very consistent. She had one hiccup, the rest of the day she was 30-35 pins over her average for the season

“I'm proud of all the girls. They worked together as a team and hopefully we can get better next week and fix some of those hiccups.”

“They're a group of seniors,” said Kahok coach Sean Hay of his team. “We came out a little rough in the morning and that's what we've kind of been doing all year long; we're always aware we can bring it back. We're going to try to tap into that resource for next week to start strong and go from there. This team has been working hard – especially some work during the summer – which has allowed them to get inside when they need to, and that's something girls teams as a whole have a hard time with.

“They're good at playing down the rail, but when they have to make a transition left, they have a hard time with it; our girls have been working their tails off and have all developed that game. We're fortunate we've got eight strong bowlers; I just have to pick the right five.”

ALTON – Ashley Heistand has been bowling since she was in third grade.

Last year, as a junior, Heistand reached the IHSA state tournament in Rockford as an individual, finishing in 28th place, finishing with a two-day, 12-game total pinfall of 2,518 after reaching the state tournament in her freshman year as part of a Redbird team that advanced to Rockford with a third-place Alton Sectional finish that year.

This year, Heistand, a senior, is a team leader for the Redbirds. Last weekend, Heistand came back from deep in the pack to finish 10th individually in the Abe Lincoln Invitational tournament and help lead the Redbird girls to a third-place team finish.

“I've been bowling since I was in third grade,” Heistand said. “My best friend brought me to (bowling); we did it for something fun to do on Saturday mornings,” much like many others who took up bowling as youths.

Heistand hopes to finish the high school season strongly and hopes to advance to the 45th IHSA state tournament, set for the weekend of Feb. 17-18 at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford. Past that, Heistand is hoping to bowl for a collegiate program. “I'm kind of in-between decisions on what to do; there's a lot of schools that have what I want to do, but don't have bowling programs.”

As far as pro bowlers, Heistand looks up to Australian Jason Belmonte, known for his two-handed style; Belmonte has won 12 PBA championships in the United States, including six majors. “He's a two-handed bowler,” Heistand said. “He's unique in the way he bowls, and not a lot of people bowl like him. It's becoming (Belmonte's two-handed style) becoming more popular.

“I don't model my game after anybody; I just think, like overall, try to stay within myself. I know what I can do and just try to do my best.”
