With the first rounds of the tournament set for Friday, all eyes will be focused on advancing to the second day of the annual tournament.

“Getting to Saturday is what we’re all hoping for,” Alton coach Dave Meyer said. “Getting our team back to the state tournament is always a first goal and once you get there, you want to advance to Saturday.”

Saturday is when the organized mayhem that is the state bowling tournament grows a little more intense.

“There’s a lot riding on every game,” said Roxana bowler Christian Bertoletti, who captured the individual championship at Monday’s Alton Sectional Tournament. “I’m really happy our whole team is going too.”

The Shells, along with Alton, Columbia, Collinsville, Belleville East and Freeburg advanced out of the Alton Sectional. The top six teams move on to state from each sectional, as well as the top seven individual bowlers not on a qualifying team.

Qualifying teams and individuals from sectionals at Hinsdale South, Rockford Jefferson and Tinley Park Andrew will be in O’Fallon.

Columbia won the Alton Sectional team title. Roxana was fourth and Alton fifth. While the players were celebrating Monday night following the sectional, their coaches were quick to point out that another challenge lies ahead this weekend.

Seven seniors and a sophomore make up Alton state team. The seniors include Daren Cochran, Chris Duke, Matt Engdale, Lance Perkey, Gavin Taylor, Trevor Vallow and Ta’Ravion Ward. Dannny Laslie Jr. is the lone AHS sophomore.

Duke was Alton’s top bowler at the sectional with 1248 pins, closely followed by Engdale with 1245. Engdale also had the high game at the sectional with a 279.

Besides sectional champion Bertoletti, the rest of the Roxana state team will include senior Blake Adams, senior Ethan Baumgartner, senior Jake Weigel, sophomore Logan Wonders, senior Dayton Grizzle, senior Mason Warwick and freshman Drake Westfall.

Among the individual bowlers advancing from the Alton Sectional is Jersey junior Jeremy Vanost.

The intensity rises as bowlers advance along the postseason road, according to Meyer.

“You want to win the regional, then comes the sectional,” Meyer said, “and if you get to state, it gets more intense.”

Bertoletti is making his third appearance at the state tournament, but first with his teammates. He said he hopes he can prepare the rest of the Shells for what lies ahead.

“The adrenaline will be high,” Bertoletti said.

Last season, Rocktown Hononegah captured the state championship. O’Fallon was the highest-finishing area team with a fourth-place finish.

Friday, doors will open at 7:30 a.m. for bowlers at St. Clair Bowl, 5950 Old Collinsville Road. General public can enter at 8 a.m. Warmups will get under way at 8:45 a.m. with the first round for all 24 teams and 30 individuals.

Following a break for lunch, warmups for Round 2 will start at 12:45, with the second round of competition start at 1 p.m. It is expected to last until 3:45.

The top 12 teams and individuals who advance to Saturday action will warm up at 8:45, with the third round of bowling starting at 9 a.m. The second round will start at 1 p.m. following lunch break. The awards ceremony is expected to take place about 4 p.m.

ALTON — Roxana bowler Christian Bertoletti had his eyes on the prize Monday at Bowl Haven. But it claiming it would be a substantial challenge.

Going into the last game of the Boys Bowling Sectional, Bertoletti needed a 235 to catch Collinsville’s Ethan Gardner for the top spot. Ultimately, he needed four strikes to finish it.

No sweat. As the last bowler to finish, and with fans and many of the other teams who were in for the day gathered around, Bertoletti rolled what was needed. He tied Gardner for the individual championship and in the process helped lead the Shells to their first state tournament berth.

Bertoletti needed four strikes for the tie and that’s what he got. But the senior, who had advanced to state as an individual the last two years, was so focused on his team’s performance, he was initially unaware of how close he was to the individual crown.

“After the eighth frame of the fifth game, a teammate of mine pointed to the individual names across the bottom of the screens,” Bertoletti said. “He said, ‘Hey, you’re in first.’ I thought, ‘Oh, OK.’

“I really hadn’t been concentrating much on individual, just the team.”

Bertoletti and Gardner tied for the individual championship at Monday’s IHSA Boys Bowling Sectional Tournament at Bowl Haven. They each also helped their respective team earn a qualifying berth to this weekend’s IHSA Boys State Bowling Meet at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon.

The sectional had been originally scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed because of a forecast of snow for Saturday. The state tournament will get under way with preliminary rounds Friday and finals Saturday.

Bertletti and Gardner each rolled a 1382 for the top individual spot. Bertoletti’s Shells finished fourth in the team standings with 5965 pins, while Collinsville was second with 6133, just behind team champion Columbia’s 6299. Belleville East was third with 5988.

The team approach worked for the Shells, who captured their first state berth after being in 13th place at lunch break.

The exciting finish capped a memorable day for the Shells

“With all the situations he’s faced, Christian can handle pressure,” Roxana coach Brian Kasting said. “He’s bowled enough tournaments that I knew he could finish this.”

Bertoletti vaulted from 19th place to the top. His climb up the ladder culminated with nine consecutive spares before his four strikes to end it.

“I knew as soon as the ball left my hand it was good,” Beroletti said. “It was a really good day. We now what we can do as a team under pressure.”

While the Shells will make their first state tourney appearance, Kasting wasn’t sure such a fate was in the cards at the lunch break Monday. But Roxana, which was 13th at the break, steadily rose in the standings.

“We hit our stride in the afternoon,” said Kasting, in his first year as head coach of the Roxana bowlers. “We gradually got better as the day went on.

“All of a sudden, I said to myself, ‘We have a real shot at this.’”

Sectional host Alton High also earned a team state berth. The Redbirds finished fifth with 5840 pins, just behind the Shells. Freeburg grabbed the sixth and final team state berth.

The top six teams advance to the state tourney, which is set for Friday and Saturday.

Centralia finished seventh with 5753, followed by Civic Memorial eighth 5721, Herrin ninth 5684, Anna-Jonesboro 10th 5660, Salem 11th 5634 and Harrisburg 12th 5595.

Roxana’s other scores Monday included senior Jake Weigel 1186, senior Blake Adams 1179, senior Ethan Baumgartner 1111 and sophomore Logan Wonders 1107.

“If someone was down, two guys would step up and pick him up,” Kasting said of his team’s approach. “Then, if those guys would struggle a little, somebody else would pick them up. It was a really good team effort.”

Alton’s top scorer was senior Chris Duke, who rolled a 1248. Senior Matt Engdale was right behind him with a 1245. Senior Jared Cochran bowled a 1170. Other scores included senior Trevor Vallow 936, senior Gavin Taylor 743, sophomore Danny Laslie 334 and sophomore Ta’Ravion Ward 164.

Engdale of the Redbirds rolled the high game on the day with a 279.

Columbia’s top individual was Jacob Amos with 1296 pins. The Eagles’ Nathan Bostick was right behind with 1289 and Seth Harris was close with a 1255.

East was led by Brandon Lacy’s 1253, while Freeburg was led by Zach Elbe’s 1190.

Seven individual bowlers also qualified for the state tournament, including Jersey’s Jeremy Vanost with a 1274. Other qualifiers were Taylorville’s Brian Skienka 1314, Lebanon’s Brandon Ogden 1291, Waterloo’s Ryan O’Guin 1283, Gibault’s Josh Hugger 1277 and Herrin’s Tyler Miffin 1228.

DECATUR — Two days late was no problem for the Alton High boys bowling team. In fact, Monday’s IHSA Boys Bowling Regional Tournament at Spare Time Lanes in Decatur ended up being a good day for Telegraph area teams in general.

Alton rolled to its third consecutive team regional championship, getting past runner-up Civic Memorial, while Jersey placed third and Roxana was fourth.

CM’s Gordon Madrey grabbed the individual regional championship with 1315 pins. Alton’s Trevor Vallow was second overall with 1296, followed by Christian Bertoletti third with 1272 and Chatham’s Connor Jones fourth with 1271.

The regional tournament had been originally scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed because of the heavy snowfall that hit the Midwest over the weekend.

That means all four local teams will advance to next Saturday’s Alton Sectional Tournament at Bowl Haven.

“It was a good day for the local bowlers,” Meyer said. “The teams that had to drive up here (Sunday) and spend the night ended up having the best day.”

Alton claimed the team championship with 5296 total pins. CM was second with 5814, followed by Jersey third with 5598 and Roxana fourth with 5583.

The rest of the team standings including Abingdon fifth with 5297 pins, Taylorville sixth with 5219, West Central seventh at 5173, Marquette Catholic ninth at 4916, Southwestern 10th with 4819 and East Alton-Wood River 11th with 4718.

“Winning a third straight regional was one of this team’s goals all season,.” Alton coach Dave Meyer said. “Especially since we had seven seniors. We wanted them to go out with a bang.”

The top 10 individuals who aren’t on one of the advancing teams will also advance to the sectional tournament at Bowl Haven.

Zane Longley led the way for Jersey with 1227 pins and a seventh-place individual finish.

“We had a good day,” Jersey coach Chris Skinner said. “Qualifying as a team is always the goal.”

Meyer said that his team’s third consecutive regional title was different from the first two.

“It was a combination of everybody pitching in,” Meyer said. “Even the boys who weren’t bowling today cheered and supported the team.

“We had a good core,” Meyer said. “And we got off to a good start with a great first game out of the block. We led it all the way from the first game.”

The Redbirds did stumble a but midway through the day. Combined with a strong CM game, the Eagles were able to climb from 114 pins back to within 43 pins, but they got no closer.

Other area scorers included CM’s Cort Jackson fifth with a 1243, Alton’s Matt Engdale sixth at 1242, Jersey’s Jeremy Vanost ninth with 1195, Alton’s Gavin Taylor 11th at 1180 and Logan Wonders of Roxana 12th with 1165 pins.

Sam Cogan was tops for Marquette with 1135 pins and 19th-place finish. William Hoesing of Carlinville was 26th with 1085 and Joel Tucker paced Southwestern with 1068 pins and a 27th-place finish. The top bowler for EA-WR was Garrett Holt, who was 32nd with 1031 pins.

BOYS’ MEET: ALTON 39, EDWARDSVILLE 1

EDWARDSVILLE – The Alton Redbird boys bowlers, behind a 604 series from Jared Cochran and a 587 from Chris Duke, defeated the Tigers 39-1 on Tuesday at Edisons Entertainment Center.

In the junior varsity meets, both teams traded 7-0 wins, with the Alton boys winning over the Tigers, and the Edwardsville girls taking the win over the Redbirds.

Both the Redbird teams bowled well throughout the match.

“The boys are doing good, boys’ varsity’s doing really well,” said Alton coach Dave Meyer. “They need to improve a little bit, but, I mean, it’s making spares, making consistent shots. They’re going to win their match easily against Edwardsville’s boys, the JV boys won their match. The varsity girls, they’re still coming along. We’ve got some growing pains that we’re going through. We only have five girls for varsity. We need to find some more, and we had one sick today, so we only had four, but I mean, they grind it out, they worked hard, and they worked hard all weekend, too.”

Both Cochran and Duke’s series helped the Redbirds to a near sweep of the points against the Tigers, and the team has been doing well early on.

“Right now, the boys are doing good,” Meyer said. “They’re starting to grow. And they’re coming together as a team, they’re staying together, but they should, because they’re all seniors. We have a couple of hot ones on the team right now; we’ve got Chris Duke, we’ve got Matt Engdale, he can come along and be a hot person. They’re both seniors. Jared Cochran, he was doing good tonight and everything, so I think if we can get them all clicking on engines here after Christmas, come January, they’re going to be in the hunt come regionals and sectionals.”

On the other side of the coin, a very young Edwardsville team continues to develop.

“I think that we haven’t been progressing like we need to,” said Tigers coach Kimber Moscardelli. “I think that we definitely have had the time to start working on things, and we’re not seeing what we need to be seeing at this point in time, so I think by now, having our second match, I think it’s definitely time to start thinking about what we can do in our practice time to start ensuring that we’re going to start seeing the progression. I see some progression in some of the bowlers, but I also see some digression, so it’s real important right now that we build a good team chemistry, and it’s important that we start to work on some drills and mechanics, because there’s been a lot of things that we’ve been trying to do in practices that I’m not seeing on the lanes. And so, I think we just need to mix some things up to try to approach what we need to work on from a different angle.”

The Tigers didn’t particularly have a standout bowler on the night, but there were a few bright spots that came through during the match.

“I really think we had a difficult time really having a bright spot in general,” Moscardelli said. “The people who are usually bright spots even struggled. I think that it took a little while, but Eian (Sims) got hot the last game, and Jackson (Budwell) had some bright moments in games, but he also had some struggles in the middle of games. I wouldn’t say that we had really a standout performance tonight; it may be coming off of Thanksgiving break. But I think mentally, the boys have got a little bit more of a challenge in front of them just to kind of lock-in and zone in like the other programs are. You know, like whenever I see the Alton program, all of them are watching each other throw the balls down the lane. I don’t think our bowlers are quite watching everybody’s shots more, with that attention. So as far as standouts, I think that nobody stood out as much as they could have, but it just gives us an idea of what we can be working on.”

It’s still early on in the season, and everything is correctable, and there’s still a learning curve for the young Edwardsville team.

“Yes, it’s still early in the season,” Moscardelli said. “I also have to remember that we have a really young team. Tonight, I had four freshmen, a sophomore and a junior out on the lanes. And that’s a very young program compared most others. Alton had all seniors tonight, for the most part, and that’s also another challenge that these guys have to face. It’s certainly intimidating when you’re bowling guys that have three years on you in high school, but that doesn’t mean that they can achieve the scores that they need.”

Sims led the way for the Tigers with a 463 series, bowling games of 139, 152 and 172. Budwell had a 444 series, with a game of 145. 156 and 143, and also scored Edwardsville’s only point of the night with a second game win over Alton’s Lance Perkey. James Zugmeier had a 365 set, while Steven Leitschuh bowled a 353 series, Derrick Newsome had one game of 100, and Kyle Voepel had a two-game set of 190.

Duke led the way for the Redbirds with his 587 set, bowling games of 184. 181 and 222, Cochran had games of 201, 202 and 201, while Perkey had a series of 546, with games of 200, 135 and 211. Engdale had a 523 series on the night, Trevor Vallow had a two-game set of 369, and Danny Laslie tossed one game of a 134.

Moscardelli is seeing similarities between the boys’ program now and the girls’ program of two seasons ago, and thinks that there are positives that the boys can take away from the match.

“Even though it’s a tough time, I’m seeing a lot of things in the boys’ program that I saw in the girls’ program two years ago,” Moscardelli said. “While it’s sometimes it’s a really tough loss whenever you’re getting beat by 300 pins a game, there are still some positive things to take out of these matches, and that we have a bar to reach. And so, there’s always somewhere else to get to the next step, and that we can always get our way to the ceiling, and that once we reach the ceiling, we’ll set a new limit. So maybe our target is a little too high right now, but I think once we set a new target, and the boys know what they need to shoot for, I think they’ll have a better time getting there.”
