Edwards, also a senior, scored at a 12.3 points-per-game clip and helped the Redbirds to a 16-12 mark.

GRANITE CITY — While Alton’s early success from beyond the three-point arc gave rival Edwardsville some concern, it may have ultimately cost the Redbirds.

Alton flirted with the Tigers in spurts Friday night, but top-ranked Edwardsville kept the redbirds at bay and grabbed a 66-53 victory in the championship game of the Granite City Class 4A Regional Tournament at Granite City High School.

“(Alton) has so many different guys who were making threes for them,” EHS coach mike Waldo said. “It gives you something to be concerned with, yes. Alton is a hard team to defend anyway, but that can make it more difficult.”

While Alton coach Eric Smith agreed that there were indeed several Redbirds draining treys early, he thought that overall his team relied on them too much.

“We shot too many threes,” smith said. “For you to be successful against (Edwardsville), you have got to be patient. we’ve preached that every chance we have had.”

The victory for the 29-1 Tigers means a date with Southwestern Conference rival Belleville West Tuesday in a semifinal of the Ottawa 4A Sectional. That game will be played at Collinsville High School. West handed the Tigers their only defeat this season, 59-53 on Dec. 3 at SIUE. West’s Maroons advanced by beating East St. Louis 67-60 Friday in the final of the Belleville East Regional.

Edwardsville led most of the way after the teams traded baskets early. The Tigers led 22-16 at the end of the first quarter. The Redbirds would have been two points closer if not for Edwardsville only trey of the quarter – a 60-foot heave at the buzzer by Jack Marinko.

In the first quarter, the Redbirds make 12 of their points from beyond the arc on two treys by Donovan Clay and two by Kevin Caldwell Jr.

“That’s what I mean,” Smith said, referring to the treys in the first quarter. “We made four treys, but we were still behind by six points at the end of the first quarter.

Alton’s Damion Reid came off the bench and made a pair of treys in the second quarter, the second of which got the Redbirds within three points at 25-22 with 7:03 left until halftime.

Ty’ohn Trimble made another three-pointer that tied the game 27-27. The only other basket by Alton in the quarter was a rebound basket by Maurice Edwards.

Donovan Clay led Alton with 12 points. Reid added 11 and Trimple scored 10.

Edwardsville, on the other hand was making baskets the old-fashioned way – and the points kept piling up. AJ Epenesa, who led the way with 24 points, had 18 at halftime.

EHS’s Mark Smith scored 13 points, 11 of them in the second half.

After Trimble’s three-pointer tied it at 27-27, the Tigers got a dunk from Epenesa, a trey from Caleb Strohmeier and a pair of free throws from Mark Smith to finish the half in a 7-0 run.

In the second half, the Tigers steadily pulled away. They extended the lead to 11 points at 47-36 heading to the fourth quarter and cruised.

“Alton and their coaches did a tremendous job this year,” Edwardsville’s Waldo said. “They had adversity with missing kids with injuries, but they kept fighting and they played well. They are the kind of team that works hard the whole game and that’s why we had to concentrate on defending them.

“We didn’t want to give them any easy baskets and I thought we did a pretty good job of that since so many of their shots were threes.”

Smith, whose Redbirds finished 16-12 added, “Our kids competed all year. We really didn’t have any bad losses. Any team we lost to was a quality team.”

GRANITE CITY – Southwestern Conference rivals Alton and Edwardsville will be clashing for the third time this season tonight, this time with much at stake.

The Redbirds and Tigers will meet at 7 p.m. tonight at Granite City's Memorial Gym in the final of the IHSA Class 4A Regional, with the winner taking on tonight's East St. Louis-Belleville West winner in tonight's Belleville East Regional final at 7 p.m. Tuesday at a Metro East venue to be announced in a semifinal contest of the Ottawa Sectional.

Edwardsville enters the game with a 27-1 mark on the year, the Tigers' only loss coming early in the season to Belleville West in the SWC season-opening SWC at the E event at SIU-Edwardsville's Vadalebene Center; EHS won the SWC title with a 13-1 record and defeated Chatham Glenwood 67-38 in a semifinal game Tuesday night. Alton goes into the game at 16-11, having eliminated the host Warriors 74-40 in a first-round game Monday night and Quincy 53-43 in Wednesday night's semifinal contest; the Redbirds finished at 7-7 in the league this season. In their two SWC games this year, Edwardsville defeated Alton 59-48 in Alton Jan. 24 and 76-61 in Edwardsville Feb. 17.

Maurice Edwards leads the Redbirds in scoring with a 12.8 points-per-game average, followed by Kevin Caldwell at 11.2 PPG, Dereaun Clay at 10.9 PPG, Ty'ohn Trimble at 8.9 PPG and Donovan Clay at 5.9 PPG. For the Tigers, the senior trio of Mark Smith (21.4 PPG), A.J. Epenesa (15.2 PPG) and Oliver Stephen (13.9 PPG) lead the way, with Jack Marinko adding 8.9 PPG and Caleb Strohmeier 7.9 PPG; Epenesa leads EHS in rebounding at 13.9 RPG, with Smith averaging 8.2 RPG and Stephen 5.1 RPG.

Both teams do have a recent postseason history against each other; the Redbirds eliminated the Tigers from last year's Collinsville Sectional semifinals 63-59 and from the 2015 Edwardsville Regional final 44-27; Edwardsville defeated Alton 55-40 in the 2014 Granite City Regional final.

ALTON - All good things must come to an end, but for the seven departing seniors from Alton High School, this is just the beginning.

The Redbirds put the regular season behind them by celebrating a Senior Night win against the O'Fallon Panthers on Friday, Feb. 24. With the 62-47 win, the Birds ended with a 14-11 record heading into the postseason.

"It's nice for our seniors. They put a lot of time and effort in these last four years for us. We're fairly demanding and ask a lot of them and they've done their part. You want to make sure they have the opportunity to go out the right way."

Ty'ohn Trimble led Alton with 20 points and Maurice Edwards followed closely behind with 18 points. Kevin Caldwell contributed seven points while Dereaun Clay scored six. Morris Adams and Damion Reid scored four points each and Donovan Clay landed a three-pointer in the third period.

O'Fallon's Jalen Hodge scored 13 points Friday night. Deion Norfleet contributed eight points while Ryan Fulton and Alex Orr scored seven points each. Jarvus Smith and Daron Thomas each contributed four while Steven Sharp and Burke Watts brought in two points.

Next week, Alton will face off against Granite City in game two of the IHSA Class 4A Regional at the home of the Warriors.

"We've had some tough games with Granite throughout the season and our schedule has prepared us for the postseason," Smith said. "Our conference is pretty demanding so the nice part is we've competed each and every night and it has helped us out heading into the post."

West takes advantage of AHS turnovers in win over Redbirds

GODFREY — Leading by six late in the third quarter, the Alton Redbirds were poised for a late-season signature victory.

Then the turnover bugaboo happened, Again, and again, and again. Twenty of them to be exact.

And from the last minute of the third quarter on, it was all Belleville West, which outscored the Redbirds 22-5 the rest of the way, including 20-5 in the fourth quarter to take a 52-41 Southwestern Conference victory on Tuesday at Alton High School.

The Redbirds (13-11, 6-7) turned it over seven times in the fourth quarter, Belleville West (17-8, 9-4) was getting easy transition possessions going the other way and it was an avalanche of mistakes that couldn’t be contained.

“It’s tough to win a basketball game when you turn it over 20 times to a team that’s as good as they are,” Alton coach Eric Smith said. “… We turned it over at a high rate the entire game.”

The Redbirds led 36-30 late in the third and had the ball with under a minute to play. It seemed as if they were going for the last shot and at the very least, would carry a six-point lead heading into the fourth.

But an ill-advised long-range 3-point attempt by Kevin Caldwell, who finished with 12 points, was off the mark, the Maroons got a bucket from Keith Randolph to make it 36-32 and carried that momentum into the fourth quarter.

Tyler Dancy, who scored 10 of his 11 points in the fourth, and Eric Liddell, who finished with a game-high 17 points, were twin terrors in the second half.

“We’ll kind of do some of that stuff, but usually, we’ve got some kids that can make plays,” Smith said. “If time’s running down and they break off of it to make a play, more often than not we’ve been OK with that.

“I don’t necessarily think it had anything to do with the whole grand scheme of things at the end, but if we turn it over at a high rate like we did, it just magnifies everything else.”

The Redbirds started slow but picked it up in the middle quarters. Ty’ohn Trimble made a trio of treys in the second, and Donovan Clay scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the third quarter.

But Maurice Edwards finished the game with one point on 0-for-5 shooting.

West’s ability to clog the 6-foot-7, 276-pound Dancy and the 6-7, 220-pound Liddell in the paint made life hard for Alton inside the 3-point line.

“I think he kind of did, for the most part in that first half what we expected,” Smith said of Edwards. “He got into the paint, he made two or three guys come get him and he made the right play throwing it to somebody on the perimeter to make a play. We shoot it a little better in the first half, maybe it’s a little bit different.”

The Redbirds close out the regular season Friday at home against O’Fallon before playing Granite City to open regional play on Feb. 27.

Alton's Kevin Caldwell
Alton's Kevin Caldwell
COLLINSVILLE – Kevin Caldwell has come up big when his Alton teammates needed him most.

Caldwell drove the length of the floor and scored, then came up with a big defensive play down the stretch when the Redbirds defeated O'Fallon on the road in early December.

Then came a road game at Belleville East right before the holidays when, after the Lancers had tied the game in the late going, Caldwell went down the floor and launched an NBA-range three-pointer that knocked off the Lancers.

All that came while Maurice Edwards was out of the Redbird lineup.

Caldwell reached a career high with a 31-point game against McCluer in last week’s Belleville East Chic-Fil-A Classic tournament, helping the Redbirds win the consolation-bracket title.

“When Mo was out, I wanted to step up and be a leader,” Caldwell said, “bring us together when one of our best players not being there; that's the time when we needed to come together and play together. I stepped up a little bit and my teammates helped me.”

The Redbirds' come-from-behind win against the Lancers was, in Caldwell's eyes, a statement game. “Coming from behind and beating a good team like that without our best player, that was good. There's lots of good teams around here and a lot of good players; you've got to come out and play hard every night.”

Caldwell began playing basketball when he was in first grade. “My dad played, so I was kind of forced into it,” Caldwell said with a laugh. “But I love the game and love to play it; it's a good game.”

When Caldwell started playing, he modeled his game after Kevin Durant. “I'm no long, tall 7-foot guard,” Caldwell said. “I take stuff from Dwayne Wade and those guys who get to the basket really good; Russell Westbrook, I try to imitate him too.”

The Redbirds showed resiliency when Edwards went down with an injury at the halftime buzzer in their Tuesday night overtime win at Collinsville, which Caldwell was pleased with. “We wanted to stick with what we do,” Caldwell said. “With Mo being out, we didn't want to try being heroes, just stick to what we do.

“We just want to keep getting getting better, keep going forward, just keep going forward.”

GODFREY – It took only a four-minute scoreless stretch in the second quarter to doom the Alton Redbirds on Friday night.

The East St. Louis Flyers reeled off a 17-0 run late in the first half to erase a seven-point deficit and went on to beat the Redbirds 69-52 in a Southwestern Conference boys basketball game at Alton High.

East Side improves to 5-2 and 3-0 in the SWC. Alton is 4-2 and 2-1 in the conference. East Side had won eight of the previous nine meetings with Alton before the Redbirds won both of their SWC dates with the Flyers last season.

The Redbirds, without their leading scorer in senior Maurice Edwards for the second straight game, were positioned to make it three straight over the Flyers when Ty’ohn Trimble hit a 3-pointer to put Alton up 21-14 one minute into the second quarter.

The margin was still seven points when East Side switched from a man defense to a zone in hopes of limiting Alton’s penetration. The Redbirds switched from making baskets to missing.

“We made an adjustment and guys responded to that adjustment well,” Flyers coach Phillip Gilbert said. “We created offense from our defense and guys made shots at crucial times. It kind of opened the game up. Coach Smith is a great X’s and O’s coach.”

Alton coach Eric Smith was unavailable for comment immediately after the game. The Redbirds made 3 of 17 shots in the second quarter and trailed 33-25 at halftime. The Flyers led 51-38 after three quarters.

Fans at AHS hoping to get a look at heralded Illini recruit Jeremiah Tilmon had to look fast. The 6-foot-11 Tilmon missed more than eight minutes of the first half with foul trouble. The Flyers senior, who transferred back to East St. Louis after spending his junior year at a prep school in Indiana, fouled out with 6:43 left in the fourth quarter.

Tilmon finished with eight points on 4 of 5 shooting from the field with five rebounds and three blocked shots in 13 minutes, 42 seconds of playing time. His coach is pleading for officials to stop calling fouls on Tilmon for being 6-11.

“It’s very frustrating and I feel for the kid,” Gilbert said. “It’s a situation where he’s running down the court with his hands in the air because he doesn’t know what to do. I know the officials are not used to officiating a 6-11, 257 pound, 18 year old. It’s kind of unfortunate for (Tilmon) because he came back home to help his boys win.

“Him not getting on the court is frustrating. It’s really frustrating and I can see the frustration in his face. …. The refs have to understand that he is a big body. And just because he’s open and there’s a man leaning down, it doesn’t mean he pushed them out of the way or rooted them out. They have to see that and they have to call it accordingly, not be biased to his body style. He’s a big, physical post presence. At the next level, he’s going to be dominant. Here, all we ask is just give him a chance. Let the kid play and develop. He’s not getting the chance.”

The Flyers’ Zachery Forest came off the bench, rained in four 3-pointers and led East Side with 19 points.

“Once he gets is feet set and his confidence going,” Gilbert said of Forest, “he’s capable of hitting two or three in a row. … He came up big for us tonight in a crucial time when we needed him.”

Rey Estes and Arthur Carter each finished with 14 points for the Flyers, who shot 50 percent (28 of 56) from the field, including 6 of 13 from 3-point range, and made 7 of 11 free throws. East Side made 14 turnovers, while Alton had 17.

After knocking down 3 of their first 5 shots from the arc, shooting was a struggle for the Redbirds. Alton converted 29 percent (20 of 69) from the field, including a 4 of 20 night from 3-point range. The Redbirds made 8 of 10 free throws.

Alton’s Dereaun Clay scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the second half, including 10 in the final quarter. Darrell Smith scored 11 points, with three 3-pointers, off the bench for the Redbirds, while Trimble finished with nine points.

O’FALLON – A high degree of difficulty required to win Southwestern Conference boys basketball games on the road is widely accepted as a given.

Seems a valid premise only when it does not include the Alton Redbirds on a school bus traveling a road that leads to Panther Dome.

Junior Kevin Caldwell Jr.’s full-court drive and basket with eight seconds left lifted the Redbirds to a 55-54 victory over the O’Fallon Panthers on Friday night.

The victory was sixth in a row for the Redbirds in O’Fallon, where Alton has not lost since Jan. 27, 2011. It was also the Redbirds’ ninth consecutive win overall the Panthers.

Alton improves to 4-1 and 2-0 in the SWC. O’Fallon, which had won four in a row after losing its season opener to Belleville Althoff, is 4-2 and 1-1 in the league.

The Redbirds were without senior Maurice Edwards, a first team All-SWC pick last season who was averaging 16.5 points in Alton’s first four games. Alton coach Eric Smith declined to define the status of Edwards, who was with the team on the bench.

“This was a big one,” Caldwell said. “We just wanted to come out, play together with our best player not being here. It’s a good team win.”

Caldwell’s two free throws with 29 seconds remaining gave the Redbirds a 53-52 lead. But the Panthers’ Daron Thomas scored off a drive through the lane to put Alton down 54-53 with 17 seconds left.

Caldwell did not hesitate, making a fast dash and basket off the glass for the game winner for the last of his 11 points.

“I was just wanting to make the best play,” Caldwell said. “Getting to the basket, I had been doing it a lot tonight. I just wanted to finish and help my team win.”

His help did not end there. After an O’Fallon timeout with 5.2 seconds left, Caldwell deflected the inbounds pass the Panthers would recover but not fast enough to get off a last-second shot.

“Little things,” Caldwell said. “Coach talks to us about plays to win games. That play took a couple seconds and made it much more difficult for them to get up the court.”

Smith said, “We had a kid make a play – two plays – at the end. We survived.”

Doing it without Edwards was no easy task. The Redbirds overcame 21 turnovers in the game and watched an eight-point lead dwindle away in the fourth quarter. Alex Orr scored 13 points and Jalen Hodge had 12 for O’Fallon, which finished with 11 turnovers.

“Our kids will compete,” Smith said. “We go through little lulls, we make some mistakes, but the thing we’ve always done is compete. I don’t think there are too many people who will tell you we don’t play our butts off.”

Dereaun Clay replaced Edwards in the starting lineup and led the Redbirds with 13 points. Alton also got a strong game off the bench from Darrell Smith, who knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and finished with seven points.

Donovan Clay, wearng Edwards’ No. 25, also hit a trey during a 12-2 Redbirds run that closed the first half with Alton up 28-22. Terrance Walker scored eight points and Ty’ohn Trimble chipped in seven for Alton.

“We had some guys step up,” Smith said. “In the first half, everybody that came in the basketball game gave us a positive contribution. If those kids don’t step in like that, we’re in world of hurt.”
