GRANITE CITY — High school football can be very much a game of momentum swings at times, For example, take the game between Alton and Granite CityFriday night.

The Warriors jumped to an early 21-0 lead in the first quarter, then saw the Redbirds cut the advantage to 21-14 by the end of the term, tie it before halftime, but got the momentum back in the second half as Granite went on to win their homecoming game 41-27 at Kevin Greene Field.

The most important thing to Warrior coach Carl Luehmann is that the Warriors are now 4-3 overall, and have a shot to make the Illinois High School Association playoffs.

“We jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, they tied it up on the last play of the half,” Luehmann said. “You know, we had some knucklehead mistakes there in the second quarter, but I’m proud of the kids; they came out in the second half, and we’re 4-3, we’re still in the hunt for the playoffs, so we got some work to do this week.”

Redbird coach Eric Dickerson was very pleased with his side’s fightback after being in the 21-0 hole.

“Oh, definitely,” Dickerson said. “I was proud of them the way they fought back after being down 21 with a little more than four minutes left in the first quarter, and we were able to claw our way back and tie it up at halftime, so that was great.”

It all started with the game’s opening possession, as the Warriors took the ball with freshman quarterback Freddie Edwards, who has quickly become one of the area’s most exciting players, accounting for much of the yardage. He capped off a four-play. 63-yard drive with a 49-yard touchdown run that made it 7-0 only 1:58 into the game.

After an Alton punt, the Warriors only needed two plays to increase the advantage. Edwards hit Kendrick Williba, playing in his first game after injury, with a pass covering 44 yards for a second touchdown. Brandon Bettag’s convert made it 14-0.

The next Warrior possession only took three plays, as Edwards Brennan Haddix took the ball to the Redbird 14, where Richard Graham went around end for the third touchdown in 6:55. The convert made it 21-0.

It’s a total team effort for coordinator Brad Hasquin’s offense, as Luehmann was quick to point out.

“You know what? It’s our whole offense that’s doing a real good job right now.” Luehmann said. “Not just Freddie. Our line’s who produces holes for him It’s our team that’s doing it right now.”

The Redbirds stated their comeback in a big way, when quarterback Taylor Price, who also had a very good game, hit Kevin Caldwell on a 73-yard bomb, then scored himself three plays later from the one. Johnathan Bumpers added the convert to make it 21-7.

The Alton defense got the ball back on an interception with a minute left in the term, and it took the Redbirds only 25 seconds to turn it into points. Price and Caldwell connected twice, first for a 42-yard pickup to midfield, and again on a nifty catch and run by Caldwell for a 50-yard touchdown. The kick made it 21-14 after a very entertaining first quarter.

“It went back and forth,” Dickerson said. “We seem to have a few of those games here lately.”

In the second quarter, mistakes plagued the Warriors. A 85-yard punt return for a touchdown was cancelled out because of a penalty, and the ensuing drive was stalled because of another penalty. Alton took advantage with an 11-play, 97-yard drive that took 3:55. Darrell Smith made some nice runs, while Price completed passes to Ahmad Sanders, and Bumpers, while making a nice run of his own. It was Price who hit tight end Morris Adams with a five-yard TD pass with 11.0 seconds left in the half to tie the game at 21-21, and the Redbirds seemingly with the momentum.

On the first possession of the second half, Alton caught a big break after a punt deflected off a Warrior player; the Redbirds recovering on the Granite 18. But the Redbirds couldn’t cash in, as the defense held on four plays, giving the Warriors the ball for the first time in the half.

It only took the Warriors seven plays to to score, Graham and Edwards getting key first downs, then Edwards and Williba teaming up for a 33-yard reception to put the ball at the Alton one. Edwards hit Eugene Williba with the TD pass. Bettag’s convert game Granite a 28021 lead, one it would never relinquish.

Later on, a Redbird punt took a huge bounce before being downed at the Warriors 21. On the next play, Edwards took a low snap, then got by a tackle and was off on a 79 yard touchdown run. The convert was wide right, but the Warriors took a 34-21 lead.

The Warrior defense held on the next Redbird possession, and Graham, himself enjoying a good game, carried the ball to start the drive. Edwards gained 22 on a broken play, then Graham did the rest, scoring on a seven-yard run, upping the Granite lead to 41-21 with 6:40 remaining in the fourth.

The Redbirds weren’t done yet, and they kept clawing, Charles Miller, in at quarterback after an injury to Price, connected with Smith, who came back for an under-thrown pass, beat a defender and sprinted in for a 70 yard touchdown with 4:54 left in regulation. The convert dinged off the left upright no good, leaving the score at 41-27.

The Redbirds had one last chance, but a fumbled snap on fourth down was recovered by the Warriors, who ran the clock out to preserve their win.

Dickerson agreed that the homecoming crowd got their money’s worth from the game.

“Defintely,” Dickerson said with a smile. “Big plays for us, they answered back with some big plays of their own. It’s just one of those that almost came down to who had the ball last.”

The Redbirds host Edwardsville and travel to Belleville West for their final two games, and Dickerson is ready to start planning for the Tigers.

“We’ll get film, start game planning, and get ready to go.” Dickerson said.

The Warriors play their finals two games on the road, at West and Edwardsville, and will bring much confidence into those two games.

“We have two games left, we want to win both games, get to six wins and control our own destiny,” Luehmann said. “We can’t get to five and then hope to get in. We want to win both games, the kids are believing that they can, and that’s what we’re going on. We’re going in one game at a time.”

ALTON - Though their team ultimately fell to theQuincy High School Blue Devils 35-21 last Friday night, the Alton High School Redbirds offense did what they could to ensure that their team would not be taking that loss quietly.

Without the help of Johnathan Bumpers andDarrell Smith during Friday night’s matchup, it is easy to say that the Alton’s offense would not have stood near as strong. The Redbirds Nest fan zone would not have rallied as hard as they had, fillingPublic School Stadium with the shrill screams of applause and the emotion that Alton needed: hope.

After a scoreless first quarter, Quincy locked in a touchdown and an extra point from the field goal kick. At the third with eight yards to go from the line of scrimmage, with approximately 9:36 left on the clock, Alton quarterback Taylor Price shot the ball down field into the hands of Johnathan Bumpers who dashed into the end zone, leaving Quincy’s Aaron Shoot on the ground after a failed tackle in his wake to tie the score at 7-7 after the kick.

“It feels good just to help my team out,” Bumpers said. “We just can’t give up. We have to keep everybody’s head up and keep a positive attitude.”

Nearly five minutes ticked off the clock before the Blue Devils came back to take the lead again from the Redbirds with a touchdown and free point before the end of the second. Though the team was falling behind, Alton was not going down without a fight.

After scoring 21 points in the third quarter, Quincy held a solid lead of 35-7 over Alton heading into the fourth. With around 4:33 left on the clock, the ball one yard off the Blue Devil’s 30, Price snapped the ball to Darrell Smith, who weaved up the middle, darted right down the sideline and left everyone in his wake as made it to the end zone to secure an astonishing 71-yard touchdown. After the kick, the score was brought to 35-14.

With less than a minute and a half left on the clock, a touchdown run by Price and a free point froze the Redbird’s scoring at 21 to Quincy’s 35, ending the game. These plays by Bumpers and Smith have did not go unnoticed and these offensive moves are surely key to the Redbirds’ return to glory throughout the course of the season.

On Sept. 9, Alton will travel to East St. Louis to face the Flyers. Their record remains 0-2 to East St. Louis’s 2-0.

2016 PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Alton Redbirds

ALTON — Alton Redbirds football coach Eric Dickerson likes to think big.

And despite a 1-8 season his first year guiding the Redbirds and Alton football not being a part of playoff football since 2006 under Joe Hook, Dickerson wants Alton to think big entering the 2016 season.

“Our expectations are to win and get to the playoffs,” said Dickerson, who will attempt to help the Redbirds to only their second winning season since 2006. “The seniors want to get there. Obviously the young guys do, too. Week in and week out, it’s a tough schedule, but there’s no reason why we can’t be competitive and win a lot of those games to get us into the playoffs. Our goal every year is to get to the playoffs. We might be selling ourselves short if that’s not our expectation.

“Numbers are good. I’d like to have 20-30 more, but we have a small senior class, so that kind of hurt us a little bit there as far as numbers go.”

Alton’s plan started a year ago when Dickerson was hired to replace Jeff Alderman, who became the program’s athletics director, and it began with Dickerson and his coaching staff’s system that winning football is on the horizon.

“I think we started it last year,” Dickerson said. “Granted, our record wasn’t what we wanted it to be, but we had to lay a foundation of our system and our beliefs. We measured our success last year game by game. We were competitive and we’d fight to the end and we did that last year and we’re able to build on that this year.

“We had a great summer. A lot of the kids showed up and worked hard in the weight room and on the field all summer. Going into camp, we were already ahead of where we were last year as far as having our systems installed and having our kids understand what we wanted from them. So we were able to hit the ground running in August this year.”

Offensively, Alton’s run-oriented game will rely heavily on an offensive line that will have to pave the way.

Senior center Cody Markle (6-foot-1, 277 pounds) returns to start a fourth season. Senior tackle Ben Rakoski (6-1, 285) and tight end/outside linebacker/defensive end Morris Adams (6-0, 165) anchor the unit.

“He’s been a three-year starter for us. We’re really expecting him to step up and take leadership of that line,” Dickerson said of Markle. “Those are three seniors, and we’re counting on them.”

Starting quarterback Keenan Stegall graduated, so the Redbirds have a two-way race for the starting job this year, along with a slew of new running backs.

“Our quarterbacks right now, they’re still neck-and-neck between Dyllon Proudie and Taylor Price, both juniors,” Dickerson said. “It’s been an exciting camp watching these kids push each other for that starting spot.”

Juniors Darrell Smith and Kiondray Samelton (5-9, 164), sophomore Izeal Terrell and senior Kalen Samelton (5-11, 192) will battle for time running the football.

Juniors Johnathan Bumpers (5-11, 155) and Kevin Caldwell Jr. are the primary receivers.

“We feel that we have some athletes out there, and it’s our job to try and get them the ball as best as we can,” Dickerson said. “That’s week to week, game plan a little but, but we’re more of a running team. We’ll throw when we have to.”

Defensively, it will be guys playing both sides of the ball, and Dickerson wants the unit to be a group of go-getters.

“Me personally as a defensive coach, I want our defense to be the strong point of our team,” Dickerson said. “Let’s face it, if the opponent doesn’t score any points, chances are we’re going to win the game. We’re going to be aggressive. We are going to be young with a lot of sophomores and juniors playing out there.”

Bumpers, Caldwell, Terrell (middle linebacker), junior linebacker Grady Womack and junior defensive tackle Ryan Kane (6-1, 271) will anchor the front seven.

In the secondary, junior Rashad Williams (5-10, 155) and sophomore Ahmad Sanders (5-9, 132) are expected to be key contributors.

“We’re still trying to figure out,” Dickerson said. “We’re got some sophomores and juniors battling it out there.

“There’s a lot of pieces to the puzzle right now. We’re still trying to get all of that hammered out before Friday.”

Dickerson, Alton’s fourth coach in six years when he took over in 2015 after holding down the job of defensive coordinator, gets the sense that the Redbirds, who graduated 22 seniors from last season’s roster, are anxious to get after it.

After playing Rock Island in the season-opener, Alton opens the home schedule at Public School Stadium in Week 2 against Quincy before the rugged Southwestern Conference slate begins, a conference Dickerson said is “tough week to week; there are no nights off.” He expects Edwardsville and East St. Louis to battle it out for the top spot.

“After our scrimmage Friday, our kids are very excited to play Friday night,” Dickerson said. “Three weeks of beating each other up, they’re ready to face somebody else.”

ALTON - After heading back to school on Thursday, the students and facultyAlton High School are ready to get back into the swing of the school year. Fortunately for the sports fans the school and in the community, that means packing the stands on Friday night at Public School Stadium

In their annual Fall Sports Kick-Off Night, the athletes and their coaches were formally introduced to their fans with a series of scrimmages and expositions. Though the games were noncompetitive, it did not stop the players from showing each other and their peers in the crowd what their teams and groups can do.

Athletic Director Jeff Alderman is ready to see his school's athletes perform throughout the next several weeks.

"It's a neat event for our our community," he said. "It's neat for our kids to show off what they've been working on for the past couple weeks and kind of get the jitters out of their system before next Friday or whenever their games may be and recognize them. It's a nice way to start off the new school year."

Between scrimmages, the cross country, boys and girls golf, girls tennis, cheer and dance squads as well as the football teams greeted the audience with their coaches for their introductions.

Led by band director Alyssa Cudney, the Marching 100 brought a portion of their field show routine, entitled "Trance," to their audience for the first time. Featuring a solo by a bass clarinet player, a dazzling routine by the color guard and an astonishing drum line breakdown, the band of over 160 members will surely stun their competition along with their fans in the crowd with their full show in the weeks to come.

In the night's main event, the football teams headed out to the field for two separate scrimmages. While the varsity squad took some time to work out some kinks in their offense, their defense seems to be getting stronger by the day. The team will travel on Friday, Aug. 26 to Rock Island High School to face the Rocks in their first game of the season.

"We're excited about our football program," Alderman mentioned. "They're still young. We're excited that they're learning to complete. There is an awful lot of talent there and we are excited about that and the coaches are working hard."

ALTON - As they put on their helmets for a new football season, the Alton High School Redbirds are using the clean slate as motivation for the weeks to come.

Kicking off their first official day of practice with drills beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 8, the Redbirds arrived at the practice fields behind their school filled with determination and great attitudes.

Starting his second season as head coach for the Redbirds, Eric Dickerson and his coaching staff are hoping to keep discipline at the forefront of the season.

“We do have some experience coming back,” Dickerson said. “Those sophomores and juniors that played last year, we’re really relying on them to use experience that they had last year to kind of bring those young ones along and go from there.”

Eric Dickerson leads his team on the first official day of practice in helmets of the 2016 season.
Eric Dickerson leads his team on the first official day of practice in helmets of the 2016 season.
The team’s freshman squad went undefeated in their 2015 season and with luck, their addition to the varsity team can give the Redbirds another boost.

“With the first three days of helmets only, it’s a lot of learning,” Dickerson said. “We stress mental focus and preparation on these three days. [We stress] basic fundamentals and some of these kids we haven’t seen all summer, we have to get them caught up on things."

The Redbirds struggled throughout their nine weeks of play last fall, winning one game of the season in a matchup against the Granite City High School Warriors with a score of 42-14 on Oct. 9, 2015.

The team will travel to Rock Island High School on Aug. 26 for their first game of the season. Last season, the Rocks defeated the Redbirds 35-6.

Throughout the summer, the group of 60 to 70 athletes have attended workout sessions and have been showcasing some extraordinary teamwork and positive attitudes.

“It’s good to see them out here and get back into football,” Dickerson said. “The attitudes we’ve seen and the camaraderie that they have between each other now is a little bit different and it’s a good feeling to see that. If you care about the person next you, you may play a little bit harder for them.”
