ALTON - In their last home game of the season, the Alton High School Lady Redbirds basketball team honored LaJarvia Brown and Jewel Wagner for all they had done for their team throughout the year in their special Senior Nightceremony this Thursday.

After the celebrations had concluded, it was time to get down to business. Unfortunately, the 3-20 team could only muster so much against the 25-1Edwardsville High School Tigers. In all 32 minutes of play, however, the Redbirds held their own and didn’t let their opponents get into their heads despite their 67-38 loss.

GODFREY – Saturday evening's Atrium Hotel Great Rivers Shootout match-up between Jennings and Alton may not go down as the prettiest game in basketball history.

But the Redbirds and coach Bob Rickman will certainly take the outcome of it any day of the week.

Thanks to a 27-point effort from LaJarvia Brown, the Redbirds got back in the win column as they took a 48-45 win over the Warriors in the fourth game of the five-game card.

“A win is a win is a win,” Rickman said. “I think the learning process for, still, a relatively young team, outside of Jewel (Wagner) and LaJarvia, shows there. We had some bad shot selection, some bad decisions; we've got to have people make better decisions. I thought what really hurt us was people who I thought people who I thought were capable of making better decisions just didn't do it. That's something we've got to figure out.

Alton's LaJarvia Brown shines in State Farm Holiday Hoops Tourney

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - LaJarvia Brown had 19 points for Alton, but the Redbirds dropped a 48-42 decision to Lebanon, Mo., in the fifth-place match of the State Farm Holiday Hoops Invitational tournament in Jefferson City Wednesday.

Brown scored 61 points in the Redbirds' three games at the tournament, which put her an equal eighth all-time leading scorer in the tournament's history; she was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

“The two seniors (Brown and Jewel Wagner) stepped up for our team and played well all tournament long,” said Redbird coach Bob Rickman. “We get that night in and night out from Jewel and LaJarvia. If we get some production and balance from those around them, we can see things turn around in January.”

Brown led the Redbirds with 19 points, with Wagner adding 13. Lebanon's Kelsey Winfrey, a junior who has already committed to Missouri, led all scorers with 20 points.

“Early in the game, their pressure bothered us and caused some mistakes and easy baskets,” Rickman said. “We settled down and battled back, but 16 points in a quarter is too much for us to give up and be able to win a game.

“Winfrey is a great player and only a junior; she was difficult to handle and we did not step up and make some stops against her like we should have. But I think LaJarvia opened a lot of eyes in this tournament how good she can play basketball.”

Alton returns to Southwestern Conference play with a trip to Belleville East Tuesday night, followed by a visit from Belleville West Thursday night and a Saturday afternoon game against Kirkwood in the St. Joseph's Shootout in St. Louis County.

“Now we get back into conference play, and it does not get easier playing Belleville East and West, then on of the top teams in the area, getting Kirkwood in the St. Joseph's Shootout, followed by Edwardsville and our own shootout,” Rickman said.

Jerseyville, Mater Dei score season-opening victories

GODFREY • After a sluggish and often sloppy first half, Jerseyville put together a solid second half, especially the fourth quarter to earn a 43-30 victory against Cahokia in the first round of the Alton Tip-off Classic on Monday.

The Panthers (1-0) held a slim lead for much of the game, including a 21-20 at halftime and 26-24 after the third quarter. In the fourth, junior Bethany Muenstermann hit three of her game-high four 3-pointers to help the Panthers pull away.

Jerseyville outscored the Comanches 17-8 in that final frame.

"We slowed it down," junior guard Mackenize Thurston said. "And when we slowed down a little bit we ran the offense better and got layups, instead of just shooting a bunch of 3s. We rebounded better and didn't have as many fouls."

Both teams were whistled for an inordinate amount of fouls in the early going. They combined for 16 in the first quarter and had 25 at the half.

It was an adjustment for both teams that Jerseyville seemed to handle a bit better.

"It was tough," said Thurston, who picked up two quick fouls and had ju
