“We definitely didn’t want to start the game tonight by allowing a goal in the first few seconds,” Alton coach Aaron Kestler said.

Kahl, last season’s Small Schools Telegraph Player of the Year, started things quickly, scoring at 13:37 of the first period. He went on the scored three more for the Eagles and has 22 on the season in eight games played.

But the Redbirds were able to right their ship.

“We were able to dust it off,” Kestler said, “and get the win.”

The victory lifts Alton to 7-9-1, while Bethalto drops to 2-15-1.

It’s been a tougher season that usual for Bethalto, but Eagles coach Brayden Emerick said he likes what he’s seen from his players in recent weeks.

“We started slow,” Emerick said. “We were having a lot of problems in the defensive zone. I think we’ve improved a lot, though. I think that when the (1A-2A) split comes, we are on a pace to have a shot at doing well.”

After next week’s games, the MVCHA will place the top six teams in the standings in Class 2A and the bottom five in 1A for the playoffs, which will begin the following week after the annual league All-Stars Games.

Monday night, Kahl’s goal at 13:37 assisted by Clark Sasek made it 1-0 for Bethalto. But the Redbirds countered with an unassisted goal from Nick Jones at 8:16 and one from Bryce Mouser, assisted by Connor Neely at 7:31 and another unassisted Jones goal at 6:13 to go up 3-1.

Kahl’s second goal, unassisted at 1:36, made it 3-2 heading into the second period.

In the second, Alton’s Shawn Grizzle scored at 10:28, assisted by Cayden Barton to make it 4-2. Jones’ third goal, assisted by Grizzle, made it 5-2 at 8:46.

Kahl scored at 5:55, assisted by Sam Buller to make it 5-3. Grizzle made it 6-3 at 2:17, assisted by Jones. Then Kahl scored at 2:32 to make it 6-4.

In the third period, Alton’s Jon Creoxton scored unassisted at 13:38 and Bethalto’s Matthew winter scored from assists by Sasek and Kahl at 10:30.
