EAST ALTON — Alton High hockey coach Aaron Kestler was hoping to see some positive results after the league re-seeding that took place after the Christmas break.

Kestler is getting his wish.

Alton knocked off rival Edwardsville 5-1 Thursday night in a Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association showdown at the East Alton Ice Arena.

It was the Redbirds’ second victory in as many games and gave Kestler reason to smile.

“I’m really proud of the team tonight,” Kestler said. “I think we came out strong and gained momentum with the first goal. (AHS goalie Caleb) Currie played an outstanding game tonight and I think the boys fed off of his play.”

Edwardsville outshot the Redbirds 39-15, but Currie came up with 37 saves.

Alton came into Thursday’s game on the heels of a 2-1 victory over another rival, Bethalto, on Tuesday. The back-to-back wins for Alton were its first streak of the season and raised its record to 4-14-2.

Edwardsville fell to 7-11-2.

Anderson Carter opened the scoring for Alton in the first period, when he was assisted by Bryce Mouser at 12:18. The Tigers tied it on a goal by Logan Corzine, assisted by Justin Harper with 8:40

Connor Neely made it 2-1 for the Redbirds at 5:41, assisted by Bryce Mouser.

In the second period Jacob Eppel scored unassisted, giving the Redbirds a 3-1 lead, but EHS’s Corzine, assisted by Harper cut the lead to 3-2 at 7:27.

Alton’s Tristan Mouser scored from a Eppel assist at 6:06 to make it 4-2 heading to the third period. Neely scored his second goal of the game with 1:43 left, assisted by Tristan Mouser and Eppel.

In Tuesday’s win over Bethalto, a goal by Alton’s Tristen Mouser with 6:08 remaining in the second period lifted the Redbirds past the Eagles. He was assisted by Neely.

Alton took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Neely, assisted by Eppel, scored with 39 seconds left.

Bethalto’s Nolan Kahl scored from assists by Michael Dixon and Alex Winter at 11:30 of the second, setting up Tristen Mouser’s game-winner.
