WINNETKA – Addison Kaufmann and Matthew Daniel of Alton High ended their swimming season in the IHSA boys’ finals at New Trier High. Both were eliminated in Friday’s preliminaries.
Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable event for both of them, coach Lynda Willings said.
“They did a great job and it was a good experience,” Willings said. “The competition is very tough at state.”
Kaufmann, a senior bound for Cleveland State, had a strong showing the first day of action. He placed 15th at 1:55.56 in the 200-yard individual medley and just missed qualifying for the second day. The top 12 advanced, with the best six going to the championship finals and the next six heading to the consolation finals.
Last week, Kaufmann finished first in the event at the Springfield Sectional.
“Addison had the best finish ever for an (Alton High) swimmer at state,” Willings said. “He was very close to qualifying for the finals in the 200 IM and had a good time in the breaststroke. He was happy with what he did.”
Kaufmann finished 28th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.16. Overall, it was his third consecutive appearance in the state finals.
Daniel, a freshman, took 31st in the 500-yard freestyle prelims. His time was 4:46.22.
“It was a great experience for Matthew and quite an accomplishment to make it to state as a freshman,” Willings said. “He did a super job to get this under his belt his first year and see what it’s like at state. We have high hopes for him down the road.”
The state swim and diving competition concludes today in Chicagoland.
