Richard Roberts was named Scholastic All American by U.S. Swimming, the first Alton High School male swimmer to achieve this honor.
Roberts is a May graduate of Alton Senior High School, where he attained a 4.777/4.0 grade-point average and was ranked second in his senior class. To be considered a Scholastic All American by U.S. Swimming, candidates must attain a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 and meet or exceed a minimum time in their swimming events. Roberts swam a 1:42.36 in the 200 freestyle, which bettered the qualifying time of 1:42.49.
Roberts represented the Alton High School swim team at the IHSA sectional swim championships in Springfield, where he was a two-event state qualifier. This also is a first for Alton High School.
He swam for the Edwardsville YMCA Breakers, where he was a national qualifier in nine events over a three-year period.
