BELLEVILLE — Alton’s Brianna Hatfield’s play has impressed her coaches and teammates for three seasons.
Evidently, Hatfield impressed the other Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association member coaches in Section 12 as well.
The lone area junior to make All-State, Hatfield was one of two Telegraph-area players in the section to earn All-State honors in recent voting of area IHSSCA coaches conducted at Belleville West High School.
Hatfield was the fourth-ranked player in the section and Edwardsville’s Abigail Crabtree the fifth-ranked player when all the All-State votes were tabulated. Only IHSSCA member coaches’ players were eligible. The complete Section 12 list is at the bottom of this story.
Collinsville’s Emily Holten was the No. 1-ranked player in the section and earned All-Midwest honors as well. Kahoks teammate Andrea Frerker was No. 2 and Lexi Grote of Granite City was No. 3. There are five All-State slots for Section 12.
“Very deserving,” Alton coach Jeff Hayes said of Hatfield’s All-State selection. “She does a lot of things for our team. She’s such a well-r0unded player whose play makes the players around her better as well.”
Hatfield scored 20 goals and added three assists this season for Alton.
Crabtree, a Purdue recruit, scored 12 goals for Edwardsville this season and added three assists. She had four game-winning goals.
Crabtree, a midfielder/striker, leaves Edwardsville as the team’s leading goal scorer and point-getter in three of her four seasons and she finished her career with 50 goals and 19 assists.
“Abby (Crabtree) is such a great player,” Edwardsville coach Abby Comerford said. “She gives 100 percent every minute she’s on the field. I can’t say enough about her.”
Belleville West’s Bailey Redden was voted the All-State goalie, with Columbia’s Riley Iorio ranked No. 2 in the voting and Granite City’s Viktoria Johnson No. 3
The Section 12 member coaches also conducted voting for All-Sectional honors.
Telegraph-area players who were voted All-Sectional included two from Edwardsville and Civic Memorial and one each from Alton, Carlinville and Roxana.
Edwardsville junior midfielder Megan Bowman and senior defender Taylor Hansen were named All-Sectional.
Katie Kercher of Alton scored nine goals and added 10 assists for the Redbirds, and helped lead the Redbirds to a 12-6-2 record.
CM’s two All-Sectional players, junior midfielders Cassie Hall and Morgan Wilson, were repeat performers. Hall scored 23 goals and added eight assists, while Wilson scored 18 goals and had nine assists.
Carlinville’s All-Sectional player, Grace Zachary, a junior stopperback, helped anchor a Cavies defense that notched 12 shutouts on the season, including a four-game shutout streak and a pair of three-game shutout streaks on their way to a Class 1A regional championship. She also added goal and three assists.
All-Sectional player Emma Lucas of Roxana was one of the area’s most dangerous scoring threats. The junior forward scored 29 goals and added 11 assists for Roxana and had 11 game-winning goals, leading the Shells to a 14-3 mark and their first Class 1A regional crown.
There were five Telegraph-area players who received honorable mention in the All-Sectional voting, including Alaina Nasello of Alton, Jenna Robinson of CM, Cloe Copeland of R0xana, Lynde Gibbs of Carlinville and Kara Crutchley of East Alton-Wood River.
