CHARLESTON — A pair of Alton High runners picked up medals Saturday at the Illinois High School Association Class 3A Boys State Track Meet at Eastern Illinois University.

The three-class boys finals finished a three-day run at EIU’s O’Brien Field.

The Redbirds’ Deonte McGoy grabbed a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter dash and teammate Cassius Havis was eighth in the 800-meter run.

McGoy, a senior, finished the 100 in a time of 10.79 seconds, a split-second behind fifth-place Xavier Curtis of Glenbard North in the finals.

Havis, a junior, posted a time of 1:57.29 in the 800 finals, edging Prairie Ridge’s Grant Jensen, who finished ninth in 1:57.29.

Meanwhile, Edwardsville’s finsihed 12th in the triple jump with a distance of 45 feet, 3.745 inches. The event was won by Homewood-Flossmoor’s Quinton Stringfellow with a leap of 49-04.

Crete-Monee won the 3A state championship with 66 points. Homewood-Flossmoor was second with 53. Collinsville was 15th with 16 points. Alton tied for 50th with six points, while Edwardsville was 71st with one point.

CLASS 2A

Staunton senior Carson Rantanen posted the highest Telegraph-area finish of the day when he placed third in the 2A 100-meter dash. His time of 10.83 edged Chicago St. Rita freshman Kaleb Brown, who posted a time of 10.84.

Finnigan Schirmer of Marengo was the state champion in the 100 in a time of 10.62 seconds.

East St. Louis ran away with the 2A state championship, outdistancing runner-up Marengo 84-42.

CLASS 1A

Carlinville captured six medals at the 1A finals. Will Walton had two of those medals when he finished fourth in the triple jump with aleap of 44 feet, 10.25 inches and was eighth in the long jump at 21-8.5.

The Cavies’ pole-vaulting duo of Isaac Daugherty and Dustin Roberts finished fifth and ninth, respectively. Daugherty’s fifth-place heighth was 14-6, while Roberts’ ninth-place vault was 13-6.

Michael Douglas of Carlinville was sixth in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, five inches. He edged Carrollton’s Dylan Smith, who was seventh in the high jump with a leap of 6-4.

The Cavies’ Jacob Landon was fourth in the 800-meter run. He had a time of 1:57.10, good enough to edge Morrison’s Kby Brackmeyer, who was fifth in 1:57.49. Decatur St. Teresa’s Boston Stewart was the state champ in a time of 1:54.93.

In the discus, sophomore Jake Carter of Gillespie finished ninth with a toss of 151-10.

Meanwhile, Southwestern’s EJ Kahl was seventh in the 200-meter run in a time of 22.38. He was edged out for sixth place by Adam Snedden of Princeville, who has a time of 22.30. Pana’s Cody Kelin won the event in 21.57.

Catlin High school came from behind to edge Du Quoin and Pana for the team championship. Catlin finished with 40 points, while Du Quoin and Pana tied for second with 36. Pleasant Plains was fourth with 25.5.
