ALTON – Marquette Catholic’s Kolten Bauer could not fully expect to catch defending tourney champion Ben Tyrrell with three holes left Tuesday at Spencer T. Olin golf course.

“I didn’t think I did,” Bauer said of his chances of beating the Edwardsville Tigers standout, “but I knew I wanted to. I knew I was going to be close coming down the stretch and I just wanted to give myself the best chance I had at each hole. Fortunately, it worked out.”

Bauer closed strong to match par at 72 and claim medalist honors at the Alton Tee-Off Classic at Olin. He beat Quincy’s Jimmie Patterson by one shot, with Tyrrell third at 75.

The tourney title was the second in two days for Bauer, who shot 75 and won a sudden-death playoff Monday at EAWR’s Hickory Stick Tourney at Belk Park. “This was my goal, to medal in one of these two tournaments,” Bauer said. “To get them both is pretty nice.”

Tyrrell, who carded a 66 in this tourney last season to win by six shots, appeared on his way to a Tee-Off repeat before finding trouble on hole No. 3 after a shotgun start started his round on No. 6.

“Last three holes,” Tyrrell said of a double and triple bogey in a closing stretch that included a one-stroke penalty for hitting his own bag, “That didn’t help.”

Even staked to a lead through 14 holes, Tyrrell was laboring to find the game that made him the Telegraph Player of the Year as a junior.

“Kind of shaky all day,” Tyrrell said. “I was 2-under to that point, so it wasn’t where I should be. I was striking the ball well, but I wasn’t making a lot of putts.”

Still, Tyrrell is simply grateful to be playing golf a month after good fortune allowed him to survive a boating accident that could have taken his life at the Lake of the Ozarks. “For sure,” he said. “It was crazy.”

Tyrrell had to abandon the watercraft he was piloting when an oncoming boat failed to see him. Tyrrell avoided a full brunt collision, but was struck in the head by the boat. Stitches and staples were required to close gash on his head and recovery limited his golfing to sporadic outings the last month.

“He’s back to normal, playing well, playing like he always has played,” Tigers coach Adam Tyler said of Tyrrell. “He’s hitting the ball further than he’s ever hit it.”

Edwardsville won the team championship with a 311. Tanner White shot 77, Ian Bailey shot 79 and Jon Ratterman shot 80 for the Tigers, who won by 11 strokes but failed to approach the 302 they shot here last season to finish second behind Marquette.

“It’s always nice to get a win and I was really happy that we did,” Tyler said. “I just wish we would have finished a little better. With three holes left, we could have been much lower. But it’s golf. You have to get lucky, you have to play 18 holes and you have to play every shot in those 18 holes.

“We got a little bit unlucky with a couple of lies that we had. But, ultimately, I don’t think we played very good golf coming in.”

Quincy and Highland both finished at 322, with the Blue Devils taking second with a fifth-player tiebreak. Marquette added rounds of 76 from Jack Patterson, 86 from Sam Cogan and 94 from Jack Warren to finish fourth at 328. O’Fallon (334) and Belleville East (338) rounded out the top six in the 20-team field.

Alton and Edwardsville both entered two teams. The Tigers ‘B’ team shot 343 to place 11th with sophomores Hunter James and Trevor Laub both shooting 81. Alton posted a 395 to finish 17th, led by Tysen Barton’s 96 and Dylan Lahue’s 98. The Redbirds ‘B’ team was 20th at 441.

Jersey had just three golfers and did not figure in the team score. Senior Colton Wadlow led the Panthers with a 92.

Marquette won the Tee-Off with a 298 last season that included a 74 from Bauer. The junior is stepping up to the No. 1 role on an Explorers team replacing a couple talented graduates in Michael Holtz and Nick Messinger.

“There’s no complaints there,” first-year Marquette coach Ryan Geisler said of Bauer’s opening performances. “First two big tournaments of the year and to pull off medalist in both of them, he’s tough. This is a super-talented field here.”
