SPRINGFIELD — Edwardsville grabbed the team title, but it was Alton’s Redbirds who ruled the day individually at the IHSA Springfield Boys Sectional Swim Meet Saturday at Eisenhower Pool.

Edwardsville edged Chatham Glenwood 206-195 for the overall team championship. Alton, represented by its strongest sectional contingent ever, secured seven state meet berths – five individual events and two relays – for next weekend’s IHSA Boys State Swim Meet in Evanston.

It marks the most swimmers Alton has ever sent to a state meet.

Edwardsville, while winning the sectional title, had one individual state meet berth. Event winners and swimmers who finish their race in state qualifying time advance to the state meet.

Following second-place Glenwood was O’Fallon with 166 points, Springfield 86, Sacred Heart-Griffin 84, Jacksonville 53 and Jacksonville Routt 18.

Only schools with full-season varsity swim teams are allowed to compete for team points. Athletes from schools that do not offer swimming as a varsity sport, such as Alton, compete as individuals representing their schools.

Alton’s Matt Daniel and Caden Akal each grabbed a pair of state berths. Daniel was second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.29 and second the 100 butterfly in 54.41 seconds. Both were state qualifying times.

Akal won the 50 freestyle 21.61 and was second in the 100 freestyle in 47.68, each in state time.

Noah Clancy of Alton repeated as a state qualifier in the 100 backstroke, winning the event in a state time of 50.78. Five swimmers advanced from the event, including Edwardsville’s Porter LeVasseur, who was fifth in a state time of 52.84. Cole Junker of Mascoutah was second in 51.64, Belleville East’s Logan Theiss third in 52.19 and Michael Meyer of O’Fallon was fourth in 52.80.

The Redbirds had first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and in the freestyle relay. Both were in state qualifying time.

Caden Akal, Clancy, Daniel and Cole Akal won the 200 medley relay in 1:36.97. In the 200 freestyle relay, Daniel, Cole Akal, Clancy and Caden Akal finished first in 1:27.31.

The IHSA State Meet is set to begin with prelims at 9 a.m. Friday at Evanston Township High School. Finals are set for Saturday.
