The Alton High wrestling team continues to build on its early-season success, capturing the championship of the 36th annual Newbill Tournament in Geneva, Ill., over the weekend.

The Redbirds, who knocked off visiting Belleville West 35-24 in a key Southwestern Conference dual Thursday, have been on quite a roll of late. They won the Mascoutah Invitational Tournament and then led the area squads with a fourth-place finish at Granite City over the holiday break.

In Geneva, Alton had five champions and a runner-up.

Conner Broyles, who placed fourth at state in Missouri while competing for Whitfield in 2013, took the title at 120 pounds while fellow seniors Phyllip DeLoach (145), Nicholas DeLoach (152), Qiante Wagner (160) and Darian Pierson (285) also picked up championships.

Nicholas DeLoach was honored as the 18-team event's outstanding wrestler.

Alton's Keontay Holmes took second at 182.

Alton will host Edwardsville and Althoff on Thursday.
